1841 Census - Grinyer please
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 19:22 BST (UK) »
I would be very grateful if you would look up Thomas Grinyer born aoutt 1812 and his wife Ann in the 1841 Census. They will probably be living in Rottingdean but may be in Ringmer!
Thank you so much.

Hi Gemsgirrl,

I found a Thomas Grinyer in Rottingdean, but his wife's name is Sarah? Here are the details with childrens names so you can check if this is the correct family...

Rottingdean Village, 1841 census
Thomas Grinyer, 25, Blacksmith
Sarah, 25
Samuel,5
Dinah, 4
(all born in Sussex)
HO107/1113, folio 9, page 9

Also in the village is what looks like Catherine Grinyer, 45, female servant, born in Sussex. I am fairly certain the surname is Grinyer, but maybe someone else could check that out please?
HO107/1113, folio 17, page 25

At Norton, Rottingdean
James Grinyer, 20, ag lab, born Sussex
HO107/1113, folio 21, page 4

Hope that helps,
Chris :)

Hi Gemsgirl,
Trying to tie these names in with a marriage for you.  This one is likely, Ann sometimes being used as a diminutive of Hannah.  If this is your Thomas he would have married young at about 18.

Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 20 Jun 1830:
 Thomas John GRINYER, bach
Hannah Maria BRYER, sp botp (B)

This one is a wild card as the brides name is Mary, not sarah or Ann.

Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 15 Nov 1832:
 Thomas GRENIER, bach
 Mary PANNELL, sp botp (B)

This one shows Ann as the spouse, but doesn't tie-in with the dates.

Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 17 Feb 1837
 Thomas GRINYER, bach
 Ann DEAN, sp botp (B)

And can't find the Thomas/Sarah marriage that Muvva found for the 1841 census.
Not very positive but it might lead you somewhere, hopefully not down a blind alley ;)

Jane

I wish i could help with the information you are looking for but i don't have the census you are after, however have you any connection to the Lincer, Linser or Linscer surname? When my Mother was speaking to my Great Uncle he said the family had a connection to the surname Grinyer but it unsure of what the connection is so far we have been unable to discover the connection so are hipong you might know.

With Love

Thankyou so much Muvva, Amy and Jane for your response to my request.
Firstly, Amy - I dont seem to have any links with your Linser/Lincer family.
Muvva - Thankyou for the look up . I am sure that this is "my" Thomas Grinyer as I have firm evidence that he was a blacksmith and married to Ann Dean - so am baffled by the "Sarah" However, the children's names fit - my ggrandmother was Louisa Grinyer born in 1846 in Rottingdean. What is most annoying is that I am unable to find them on the 1861 census - in spite of looking at length at the Ancestry.com web site. Does anyone have the Rottingdean 1861 Census?.....
To Jane - Yes the other 2 Thomas's are in my "tree" tho not in my pedigree.
Thomas Grenier - was a pioneer that travelled to Australia and founded a dynasty - there are a couple of books with extensive trees up to the present day.
The other one Thomas John was an editor of a Brighton Newspaper . Thankyou all for all your time.
Best Wishes
Gemsgirl
