Powis - Brampton Bryan - 1700s
« on: Monday 05 March 12 06:19 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I'm new to this site, and just learning what to do.  I've been researching my family male line for several years but have reached a block at around 1800.  I have reached John Powis, b. 1802, a sawyer by trade and living at Brampton Bryan in N. Herefordshire.

John was chr. 27 Sep 1802 (IGI Brampton Bryan C139731) and married Susannah Messer, b. Frant, Sussex . 14 Feb 1828 (IGI Brampton Bryan M139731).

Can anyone help me get back further?

Hi and welcome

There are a couple of possibilities for the parents of John Powis...

Source, family search:
27 Sept 1802 John Powis, s. of John Powis & Ann, Brampton Bryan, bap.
20 Jan 1803 John Powis, s. of John Powis & Esther, Brampton Bryan, bap.

17 April 1796 John Powis & Ann Rogers, Brampton Bryan, mar.
17 Nov 1800 John Powis & Esther Davies, Brampton Bryan, mar.

There are some reasonably well-sourced trees on Anc. Ann rogers appears to be more popular, I haven't really looked at them in any depth; without any knowledge of your John Juniors' siblings it would be difficult to eliminate one or the other.

If you have any more info such as siblings it may help to eliminate one of them.

It is also worth remembering to be aware of IGI entries that are submitted or extracted records.

Hope this is some help to you.

Regards
Geoff

Hello Geoff,
Many thanks for your reply.
I'm pretty certain it's the John 1802 rather than 1803 that I'm after - he fits best with the census dates I have, e.g.,

chr. 27 Sep 1802 (IGI Brampton Bryan C139731)
m. 14 Feb 1828 (IGI Brampton Bryan M139731)
1841 census: marital home at Buckton in township of Buckton & Coxall, John Powis, aged 39, sawyer, b.i.c;
1851 census: marital home at Adforton, John Powis, aged 49, sawyer, b. Brampton Bryan;
1861 census: marital home at Buckton, John Powis, aged 59, sawyer, b. Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire;
1871 census: marital home in 'cottage', Buckton, John Powis, aged 69, labourer, b. Brampton Bryan, Herefordshire;
Wife, Susannah, still alive, and youngest son Charles (22) still at home;
died aged 79?;
death record: most likely JFM 1881 Ludlow 6a 411; but also possible OND 1880 Tenbury 6c 143.

This makes John and Ann the more probable forebears.

So, thank you for the marriage dates of John and Ann.  Now where do you suggest I go from here?

best
David

Hi David

Following the male line, still some conjecture, but a couple more to consider...

Worth also considering that Brampton Bryan is very close to the Shropshire border.

Source, IGI (submitted record):
5 Jun 1775 John Powis, s. of John Powis & Mary, Marden, bap. (birth possibly, 30 May 1775)
Source, IGI (extracted record):
5 Jan 1776 John Powys, s. of John Powys & Margaret, Bucknell (Shrops), bap. (Margaret's surname maybe Oliver)

Just to muddy the waters...

Source, IGI:
24 Feb 1798 John Powis, s. of Thomas Powis & Elizabeth, Ullingswick, bap.
28 Nov 1802 John Powis, s. of Sarah Powis, Bodenham, bap.

There are a few John Powis' in a few of the parishes in the area, apart from those I have mentioned, Aymestry is becoming prominent.

I hope this gives you something to go at for now.

Regards
Geoff

Hi David

I still have a small niggle about JP b. about 1802/3...

If his father mar. AR, these are the offspring, not including John - IGI ext. records:
Richard 1798
Ann 1800
Hannah 1805
Thomas 1807
William 1809
George 1812

In 1851 I may have found John snr in Over Lye, Aymestry.
1851 census, HO107/1981/532/5
John Powis aged 76, Ag Lab, b. Buckerell, Shrops. (possibly enumeration error Bucknell)

1841 census, Over Lye, HO107/426/3/3
John Powis aged 65, farmer b. out of county
James and Sarah Preece, both aged 30 with 3 children
Unsure whether or not this is the same John snr.

I still think John jnr's parentage needs qualifying.

It may help if a death can be found for John snr before 1841, though initial searches have proved fruitless.
A popular BI shows a death; 7 April 1824 aged 53, Stoke Lacy, St Peter & St Paul, but that would make his birth abt 1771.

I still haven't found a death for, Ann.

Geoff
