COMPLETED Baptism Susan Sarah Ann Orton 1877
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 20:07 GMT (UK) »
I am attempting to find my Gt Grandmother's birth, but without success. Her father, a lab/Bricklayer  was a Thomas Orton b.1847 Enderby, Leics and mother Catherine E (Wilford) b. 1844 Great Glen, Leics. I have purchased birth certificates but the parents were incorrect. I am now trying to see if she was baptised somewhere in the City of Leicester. The family lived in Crab Street in 1871 and Lord Street in 1881. This was the civil parish of St. Margaret's but Christ Church ecclesiatiscal parish. She was born about 1877 in Leicester. I do not know where these streets are personally, probably demolished by now. Any help would be very gratefully received.

Hello
Thanks Mike, that looks like it could be my Susan. She was known as Susan by the family but on other documents it is Susan Sarah Ann or just Sarah Ann. Was there any other information such as an address or father's trade mentioned? Could you possibly see if there were any other children, I believe two Catherine Elizabeth's were born one 1868 and died 1869, the other 1871 and died 1872. There may have been others but I have no names. Thank you.

To avm228 no I haven't ruled that one out, the date looks promising and I now know she was a Susannah. Will have to try that one.

Hello Mike
That would be wonderful if you could, I take it this information is not on your own copy. Its very frustrating not living close enough to do these things for myself.

Many thanks.

Hello Mike
Thank you very much for the additional information, that was a surprise about the marriage church, apparently it is an Anglo-Catholic Church now, would it have been Roman Catholic back in 1866 are you aware? Non of the Leicester family I know of are catholic now.

Originally started as St: Mary’s Parish Church changed to St: Mary de Castro 1801
