Possible baptism, Tipton 1875 - TRINDER
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 21:19 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone  :)

I have the birth cert of Harriet TRINDER, born on 1 March 1875 at Court 2, Lower Church Lane, Tipton.  She was the first of 7 children born to Thomas, a labourer, and Hannah (otherwise Susannah/Susan, nee HARPER).

Thomas and Susannah married in Q4 1873 (Abingdon 2c 654).  Every BMD/census/parish record for this family has them in Oxfordshire or Berkshire - except this one birth  ???

I'd really love to know (a) whether Harriet was baptised in Tipton (b) what the Courts were like to live in - I've found them on old maps - and (c) why the family went there and how long they stayed - they're back in Oxon by 1879  ::)

Thanks in advance,
Carol

Hi again  :D

This has been moved from Lookups (thanks MR!).

Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Harriet was my Mum's grandmother, and no-one knew she came from 'foreign parts' LOL.  IMO, the canals are involved somehow  :-\

We're hoping for a baptism lookup and possibly a Francis Frith-style image.

Thanks for your interest,
Carol

With regard to court houses (or back-to-backs), these in Birmingham were probably of similar type to those in Tipton:

http://www.culture24.org.uk/places+to+go/west+midlands/birmingham/tra23962

There's also a page on Wikipedia about them.

The canals were involved in most things in Tipton - it was known as the "Venice of the Midlands" in the 1800's.

Thank you Paul, and apologies for the delay in replying ::)

I recall seeing a TV item about the National Trust and the Birmingham houses - nice to see them taking on 'ordinary' people's homes :D.  The www.old-maps.co.uk site suggests the Tipton courts were less crowded, though; there were only four in Court 2 and they look quite well spaced.

Would you know whether the parish records for St Martin's in Lower Church Lane are available online?

Thanks again for your help,
Carol

Hi Carol

Sorry, I don't know if those registers are online, I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable members will tell you for sure. Was Hannah born in Oxon or is she the Tipton connection?

Nope, she was Oxon/Berks as well - Thomas and Hannah/Susannah's families stayed in the same few k2 for generations, hence my interest in Harriet being born elsewhere :o

I'm hoping for a baptism record to help me figure out how long they stayed there :-\

All the best,
Carol

I seem to be stuck on this one :(

However, the timeframe has narrowed slightly as I now believe they were back in Berkshire by the end of 1876.  Based on the address shown in my original post, St Martin's would be the obvious choice for a baptism - but in later years Harriet said she was born in Dudley Port so maybe she was baptised there?

Any suggestions/insights gratefully received :)

Thanks in anticipation,
Carol

Hello Carol,

The area of Dudley Port is about a minute walk away from St Martins even though there were quite a few chapels in the area too.
I think familysearch have some of the transcribed records for St Martins, but as far as I know that's it.

I could look through the records at the archives for you,the only problem is that I don't know when I will be going next - I anticipate that it will be within the next four weeks though.

Hello bagpuss :)

Thanks so much for your kind offer!  Whenever you're at the archives will be fine.  Please don't spend a lot of time on this though - I can't be sure that Harriet was baptised in Staffs, but these folks had their later babies 'done' where they were born (Oxon/Berks) and always in the local CofE.

I'd be more than happy if you could just check St Martin's and Dudley Port for 1875 and 1876.  And do you know where I could find a photo or any details of Court 2, Lower Church Lane?

Thanks again ;D
