1841 Census Lookup - SMITH
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 22:52 GMT (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters,

I am trying to locate my gggg grandfather and his family in the 1841 Census. I strongly suspect the family lived in Whitby, North Riding (in 1853 young John mentioned below lived in Henrietta Street, Whitby). There is a slight chance they were at Eston though.

The family is Benjamin SMITH, Labourer/Blacksmith, age unknown, POB unknown. Wife’s name unknown. A child, John approximately 15 years old and most probably another child Joseph. There may also be a Henry.

My sincere apologies for all the unknowns. Hopefully someone will be able to turn this around for me!!

Any information appreciated.

Jeff

Hi all, With reference to Henrietta Street mentioned by Jeff, is he the John with wife Maria and son Reuben on HO107/2374/227/6 in 1851?

Thanks everyone...

I believe John was born in London, but I see mention of Durham in other searches. I've scratched my head on both of these though. I do have his birth cert but the disk drive its on has seized.

You are correct keyboard86, that's the chap.

John's marriage certificate in 1847 lists both he and his wife as residents of Aislaby!! One of the witnesses was Joseph Smith and I'm assuming it was a brother.

Worth chewing over the apprentice blacksmiths for John & Joseph. I haven't been able to locate anything as yet that fits for their birth / baptism. Maybe Benjamin & his wife has already died?

Based on the age of Joseph in your findings Pels I have search the IGI and found a Joseph Smith marriage in Aislaby in 1847 to Mary Beilby. His parents were Benjamin Smith and Sarah Sleightholm. I'll try some investigation with this and see how I go.

Hi again,

I found this before I posted the one about John, because he wasn't on this one I couldn't be sure. If you look at the spelling of Benjamin, this could be the reason why he doesn't appear easily, the enumerator appears to have added an 'e'. Might be quicker to search for Readman Smith.

1841 census:
HO107/1256/21, Folio 3, Page 2

Yorkshire, Whitby,
Township of Aislaby

Benjamine Smith, 40, Ag Lab
Sarah, 40
Jonathan, 14
Stephen, 11
Sarah, 6
Readman, 4
Elizabeth, 3
Joshua Smith, 67, Army P

All born in county.

Joshua, age 67 may not be living as part of the family, I'm unsure whether there's a line on the census page to indicate this.

In 1851 Redman Smith, age 13 is still living with his parents Benjamin and Sarah, in Aislaby.

HO107/2374, Folio 594, Page 8

Click here for the above Smith baptisms in Whitby.

Why isn't Family Search straight forward ? They all appear to be there and you get to them eventually. Hoping they're the right ones Jeff.

In 1851 there's a Pashua Smith living with them.
I would imagine this could be the Joshua who is living with Benjamin in 1841

~~~~~~~~~~
Pashua Smith, Uncle, unm, 76, Chelsea Pensioner, b. Yorks, Ayton
~~~~~~~~~~

I've found attestation papers which could relate to Joshua. They are dated 21.6.1816 ( 1st Batt Tenth Regiment Of Foot ) and claim Joshua was born in Eyton. Serving with the regiment for twenty years and eighty days. His trade at that time was a Tailor. On discharge, the paper's claim he had impaired vision and was infirm

He was 42 years of age, therefore born circa 1774. This would fit with the above Uncle Joshua (Pashua).

I'm wondering whether he could have been born in either Egton, or Great Ayton ??
