St Philips Church, Birmingham
« on: Monday 12 March 12 15:23 GMT (UK) »
Hello, I am new to this site and have been researching the Whateley Family Tree.
I notice that several Whateley's who I believe came from the village of Tanworth, were actually married in St Phillips Church in Birmingham and wondered if anyone knew if there was any reason why .

Thanks Jim

I don't know if they were by marriage licence, its information I found on the family search web site.

One marriage I found, which may be of interest to you was of Sarah Whateley to Edward Copage in 1827, they both came from Tanworth as I found them on the 1841 Census.

I recently visited an open afternoon at a local village museum that held a copy of the 1821 Census for Earlswood and surrounding area and there were some 'Wheatley's' on there, on further investigation by tracing the daughter Sarah's marriage it turned out they were in fact Whateley's.

Copage seems to be a name perculiar to Tanworth & the surrounding area. The Family I have came from there. My ancestors Jemima Copage & Henry Mander from Henley-in-Arden also married at St.Phillip's.Neither of them lived or worked in B'ham.
I have other families that lived outside of B'ham who married at St.Martin's & St.Phillip's so it wasn't an uncommon practice for couples to do this.
Ideally you need to look at the entries for the marriages.

Hi
My 3xg grandfather John Copage also married in St Philips to Ann Huse (Hughes )He was a builder so I am sure he was there building, his son Job also worked in Birmingham and married at St Martins.
If you want to see Edward's signature he was an enumerator of the census (and so were his sons Edward and Joseph.)  I am sure you know this but he was a shoe maker and ran the Post Office. His daughter, Hannah, also worked in Birmingham as a servant in Hagley Rd but had a illegit. baby and came home to Tanworth. I do have microfiche of PR for Tanworth
Regards
Marie nee Copage

Building seemed to be the stock trade of the Copages, most of mine are masons/bricklayers.

Yes, some of the Whateley family were in the building trade, carpenters etc.  My grandfather built the cottages where my father was brought up and my father was a bricklayer and built his own house.
The Whateley's from Stratford On Avon were builders, who I believe were relations and there father George born about 1807 or 1811 in Tanworth was I believe brother to my great great grandfather Thomas, born about 1817 in Tanworth, the father's of both of them was William and I know my father had relations in Stratford.
The 1841 census shows Thomas in service at Umberslade Hall, and the 1851 Census shows him living in Leamington as a Car Proprietor (coachman).
I went to Earlswood village museum to look at the 1821 Census to see if I could find there parents who I believe were William and Harriet, but only found Joseph, Hannah and Sarah Wheatley who turned out to be Whateley, living in Tanworth village, I found burial records for Joseph and Hannah and they state they came from Tanworth in Wootton and a later census shows William and Harriet with two sons John and Joseph living in Wootton Wawen.  I think that Joseph and William were brothers.
If any one has any further information I would be grateful as I am trying to find if there were any other siblings but some of the Tanworth records appear to be missing.
