Help! Can somebody point me in a direction
« on: Wednesday 14 March 12 19:14 GMT (UK) »
I started researching my family history in the last few months my main source of info were the 1901 & 1911. Through these I  found my grandfather, great grand parents. I then went to look for my great great grand parents. From the 1901 census I could work out the rough birth date of my great grand father (Patrick) so i went to my local registrars office with the info and got the name of what i thought was his parents Christopher and Margaret Cregan/ heaney, the area and dates matched but While I was there I decide to get an original print out of my great grand fathers marriage cert and low and behold the name on the cert for his father was a john cregan not christopher. I have spent ages online and in the registrars office looking for this john cregan and I am drawing a blank. Can some point me in some sort of direction to go from here. Im a bit lost. Thanks

It's best to work back step by step, as you can then check the links as you go - e.g. find a person As marriage, use the father's name and occupation to find A's birth/baptism by checking the father's name, location and father's occupation against the marriage details. A's birth gives you two names, his father B and mother C. Next step is to look for their marriage...etc..

Can you post the details of the marriage, and maybe the names and locations (i.e. townlands) on the census ?

Hi Shane

Thanks for getting back to me.  Heres what I know my Grandfathers name was christopher cregan he was born in 1898 in navan co meath and his parents were patrick and margaret cregan nee crosby. Auccording to Patrick and margarets marriage cert he was 21 when they got married in Jan of 1892 which would mean he was born in 1870/71 he was a labourer and lived in Navan and from the marriage cert Patricks fathers name was john cregan and he was also a labourer. I have no other information on john.

Thanks
Karen

The ages on census' can be out

There is a Christ Cregan born to a John Cregan and Mary Anne Collery in 1868 in Oristown, Meath

There is also a Christopher Cregan born to a John Cregan in 1868 in Kilskyre / Ballinough, Meath

These are both available on ifhf - what other information you will find on these records can be a bit sketchy as they are transcriptons of the original church records.

Just a piece of info, possibly useless, but theres a John Cregan listed on the Griffiths evaluation dated 1854, and address as The Commons, and on a final note, theres also  James Cregan listed as living at the Commons in 1854.
Unfortunately, records for Navan very bad before 1864, due to a Church fire.
