« on: Wednesday 14 March 12 19:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,
Please can you give me details of the medal and where I would possibly find the details of the person involved. I believe is inscribed as follows:
Inscribed on the edge J Wilks 20th Foot With Campaign Bars Vittoria Orthes Pyrnees Toulouse Peninsular War
Thanks
Ruth

Good evening,

This is the Military General Service medal 1793 onwards. 20th regt of foot (East Devonshires) were with the army in spain fighting Napolean's army 1808-14. The clasps are for the battles of Vittoria 1813, Pyrenees 1813, Orthes 1814, Toulouse 1814 and Peninsula 1808-14. I will check out some sites of interest and give you the links.

Hi Ruth

A soldier had to be alive in June 1847 in order to receive the MGS medal - hence the image of Queen Victoria rather than George the Third. It was apparently produced at the suggestion of Prince Albert. It is quite valuable - £800 to £1200 depending upon the rarity of the clasp combination for his regiment.

Thank you so much for that info - I will now need to see if I can find him on a census.
Would there be a record of his career at all?
Once again many thanks for that info - it is part of trying to unravel the Wilks family from Essex!
