Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders dress uniform
« on: Thursday 15 March 12 03:49 GMT (UK) »
John O'Connell 7th Battalion A&SHighlanders Co Sgt Major No 9591 discharged sick 1915, also Acting Sergeant RASC 147917 Honorary  discharge 1917
This photo of my grandfather was taken (I think) about 1918 but certainly around the end of the war.
When I showed it at the Argyll & Highlanders museum they said the only things about the uniform recognisable to them were the A&SH socks!!
Can anyone else explain any more of the uniform?

The belt buckle looks like that of the Seaforth Highlanders cap badge with scroll under with motto "Cuidich'n Righ" surmounted by a crown.
The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders have a sporran with six tassles known as the "swinging six" Argylls' belt buckle is a boars head and cat in circlets, the sporran badge I am not sure about.

I've seen that sporran badge before, but can't remember where now, and can't find it by googling.
Agree with James about the Seaforths buckle and non-A&SH sporran.

The photo can't be any earlier than 1919 because he's wearing his 1914/15 Star which, although instituted in 1917/18, wasn't actually issued until 1919-20.
Not sure what the other medal is supposed to be. If it's his Victory Medal, he's wearing them in the wrong order and you can put the date on to 1921-22. I can't identify the other medal ribbon on the right. ?MM?

If you'll forgive me - it looks like he may have just nipped into the local costume hire shop on his way to the photographer's to get a snap done with his newly received Star.

Where did the A&SH number 9591 come from? The only medal card I can find that matches your description is for 1194.

Sorry, my mistake, I did use the wrong army number - the family have used two numbers and I have established from MIC and attestations the correct one is 1194.
The other belonged to his brother James also in the A&SH and then in the RIR where he was 9591. It was used on the birth cert of John's daughter which was the first info they had - hence the confusion!
Thanks for input Based on all I've heard so far I think the family have got this wrong and indeed he must have assembled this outfit for display purposes.
The medal dates are helpful too - he got a 15 star - not a 14 star - I guess that is what you meant by 14-15 star?
Bit mysterious about the other medals unless they are something to do with his later service in the RASC.
I think I'll have to settle for the photo opportunity idea some time well after the end of the war.
thanks again

To further help with dating Riband for the British War and Victory medals(which he was entitled to as he had the Star) was available from mid Aug 1919 it was sent out to entitled personnel with a letter saying that the medal will be forwarded as soon as it is issued.(most were issued 20/21)

Cant help with the first medal it doesnt look like a British Gallantry award to me?
He enlisted first time in 1910.
First medal looks similar to some of the Army Temperance Medals .....Maybe they were on the uniform already?

FOrgive me for butting in, but ianocon earlier posted a larger version of this picture, which might help make the details easier to see:

I wonder
his father in law played the big drum in the first salvation army band. He was also in the regular army but I don't have details to hand because I am away from my computer until Monday. Will look up then. Thanks for more date info. Ian

This is a very odd combination of things...and lack of...

Yes, Seaforths on the belt buckle...But Camerons on the Sporran....Officers doublet, but Sgts sash...

Lack of spat things, and very odd shoes...lack of stripes or coat of arms (for RSM)

The first medal (left as we look) is not anything issued by the British military...

All in al this points to (as was pointed out earlier) fancy dress
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
