William Dickson, Elvington, Yorkshire
« on: Friday 16 March 12 19:27 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find the marriage between William Dickson who was born in Scotland but practised as a surgeon in Elvington. I know his wife's name was Ann/Anne and they must have married in the early 1820s as his eldest son was born about 1826.

It has been suggested that his wife's name might have been Moss but I'd be really grateful for any further information.
Thanks
Honor Wayne

Hi there

Looked for a Ann Moss on marriages in Scotland area for a William Dickson
but couldnt find one.
There is however, a Ann Moss who marries William Dickson at Eastington, Yorkshire
on 29th September 1824.  Eastringon is about 12 miles from Elvington.
He is born 1800 and is 24 and Ann is 21.

Think this could be your William

Hi
Just had a look for an elder son.  I think they had two Williams as well.

John Dickson     bapt  11th June 1825    at Elvington, parents Wm and Ann

Mary Dickson bapt 21sth March 1827             "              "          "            "

William Dickson bapt 20th August 1828 at Elvington, parents Wm and Ann
William Dickson bapt  5th February 1830       "               "          "            "
It wasnt unusual if one child died to name another one with the same name.

James McLaughlin Dickson bapt 30th December 1831 parents Wm and Ann
Thats your Scottish connection.  McLaughlin could have been his Mums surname.

Thats all I can find at the moment, had to think of all the old names for people lol.

Hope this helps you along

regards Sandymc  :)

P.S..........Had a look for you on Scotlands people and cannot find a William Dickson with a
Mother called McLaughlin so it might be one of the Grandparents names.  Do you happen
to know what his Dad was called at all????? I have a sheet of 27 William Dickson born Scotland
from 1798 to 1802 as it did say 1800 so covered either side.

Some DICKSON burials in Elivington that may be of interest:

Thomas - 30 Jun 1826 - inf
John - 9 Jan 1828 - inf
William - 21 Oct 1828 - inf
Mary - 23 Jan 1833 - age 6

Pinetree

P.S. Have you seen this website http://elvingtonhistory.org.uk there is a picture of the memorial for this family and also some baptisms.  The memeorial puts William's age as 50 when he died in 1847 which would make his birth date a bit earlier than the marriage record gave.

Thank you so much - yes, I have looked at the site but I found the memorial quite hard to read but that's interesting about his birth date. The trouble is he was born in Scotland and finding a specific Dickson in the Scottish records.... impossible!!

I also have a connection to William Fairlie Clarke who, I think, must have taken over when John Dickson died, and I think the Clarkes may have come from Ayr in Scotland so PERHAPS there's some sort of clue there!

You have to admit family history is never boring!

Hi Honor, its me, jumped over to this to see if you are aware of the Scottish Naming system that was used way back then. There are anomalies to using it and some parents didn't use it and some partially used it.

But it might just help to find the name of William Dickson's father and mother on the Scottish Records...

The Scottish Naming System
The 1st son named after the father's father.
The 2nd son named after the mother's father.
The 3rd son named after the father or uncle.
The 4th son named after father’s oldest brother.
The 5th son named after second oldest brother or mother’s eldest brother.

The 1st daughter named after the mother's mother.
The 2nd daughter named after the father's mother.
The 3rd daughter named after the mother or an aunt.
The 4th daughter named after mother’s oldest sister.
The 5th daughter named after second oldest sister or father’s oldest sister.

Good luck

That may certainly help - with so many of the people around him coming from Ayrshire, I wonder if he did? Just had a thought - with so many William Dicksons being surgeons, I wonder if his father was?
Hmmm... I think I'll move :D
