Who is he?
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 12:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, just joined rootschat.
I have an birthday book given to my Grandmother in 1910 which has a photo in the front of a stoutly oldish gent signed "from Gussy". The family were resident in Sandiacre, Derbys at the time, would it be logical to assume that it could only be an abbreviation of Angus?

Hi, rockpebblar I have found Gussy used for Angus, but it could also be from Gus.

Hello

I think it likely, that it is short for Augustus. My Great grandfather was always called Gus

Thanks for the input folks, think it may be Augustus, but don't suppose I will ever know exactly whom as he doesn't appear to be a family member. Would have been nice to pinpoint who gave it to her.

Hi, rockpebblar I also suggest you look at the names of witnesses etc on marriage certificates and names of informants on death certificates.

Hi, rockpebblar just another thought as it was obviously a gift, if you have any baptism certificates Gussy might have been a godfather of the recipient.

Hello Again...

I think there is one candidate , Augustus Hall , born 1859 Gloucestershire, He is living in Sandiacre in 1901.....

He is a widower 10 years later ......
