Robert Claricoates
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 13:03 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to establish the birth year and parents of Robert Claricoates/Clarricoates/Claricoats of Digby, Lincs. Moved to Leicester before 1822 (daughter Mary born)

He died in 1883 age 86, therefore a birth year of 1797
1881 census, birth year 1792,
1871 census, birth year 1796
1861 census, birth year 1795
1851 census, birth year 1796

So what should I take as his birth year?  ::)

There is a baptism of a Robert Clarricoates 19 Oct 1794, Digby, Lincs parents Robert & Mary. Could his father be Robert Claricoates 1764 - 1835 (Town Crier)?  :-\

Any help or guidance is most appreciated.
Thank you for looking

JJ

Robert CLARICOATS Baptised 19 Oct 1794, Digby to ROBT/MARY could be yours.
Both Roberts were Shoemakers;
Robert Snrs Occp was Shoemaker on his Sons 1794 Baptism Record on FreeREG
Mother Mary was nee GILL
Record states Mother Mary was the Daughter of Rt Gill (Robert I presume)

Robert CLARRICOATS Married Mary GILL 1793, Horncastle, Lincs
(Source Familysearch.Org) No date given

IGI is not working for me at present so I cant see what it says on there.
Marriage is not on FreeREG either.

Trish :)

You'll find that baptism here http://www.lincstothepast.com/Baptisms-and-burials/731707.record?ImageId=195820&pt=T

You fortunate as it gives his mother's and her father's names! :)

That makes finding the marriage easy http://www.lincstothepast.com/Marriages/531649.record?ImageId=125204&pt=T

Hi Trish & Geoff-E,

Thank you both for the replies. I'm sure it must be 'my' Robert as I cannot see any other likely candidates. Sometime ago I saw an article about a Robert Claricoat who was a town crier in Horncastle (can't remember where I saw it - should have taken note!!) So he could very well be Robert's father as there is the Horncastle connection (marriage of Robert to Mary)

Unfortunately I cannot access the links that Geoff-E posted, I presume there is the need to be registered?

Once again I appreciate your help.

Regards

JJ

JJen, I am a descendant of Robert Claricoates and have traced the family back to the 1500s.  The information above is correct and Robert was born 23rd September 1794 at 2.15pm, this information is from the family bible.  He moved with his parents Robert and Mary (Gill) from Digby to Horncastle by way of a settlement certificate dated 23rd March 1795.  Robert (b. 1764 Digby) was indeed the Town Crier of Horncastle.  Could the article you read about the Town Crier have been in the Horncastle News?  If so, it was myself and a cousin that went to Horncastle and was interviewed by the reporter for the article.  We were hoping that we would find descendants and more information about the Claricoates family.  Are you a descendant?  If so, I would love to hear further from you.

Hi,

Thank you so much for the reply, how interesting to hear that you have managed to trace the Claricoates back to the 1500's and that you have access to the Claricoates family bible to glean such details. You are correct in thinking that the article I read was from the Horncastle News.

I am a descendant of Mary Claricoates b.1822, Leicester, parents Robert and Mary, who I believe is the Robert born in 1794, Digby, as mentioned in your post.

It would be great if you could confirm the connection of my Mary and your Robert.  :)

I look forward to hearing from you and once again thank you for contacting me.
