Thomas Dancey
« on: Thursday 22 March 12 18:49 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for my great great grandfather, Thomas H. Dancey.  I know from the 1901 census in Canada that he was born in England in1839. Our family bible and death records for him have his birthday being August 10th! I have no idea how to even start looking

Does anyone have any suggestions?

FreeBMD gives us two possibilities:

Jul/Aug/Sep 1838 Reading Berks
Jul/Aug/Sep 1840 Brighton Sussex

I expect gortonboy is on the same track !
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi kdarby,
Wonder if we could work backwards on this posting for you, and welcome to Rootschat by the way. Do you know any of Thomas's childrens names and how have you got back to him. There are both Thomas H and just Thomas Dancey's in Canada. As Lizdb has said there are 2 births around the same time in the uk but neither are a Thomas H. Wondering if you have the right 1901 Canada census. Did Thomas have a son Joseph born c1875 in Newfoundland.

John

He was Thomas H. Dancey, he lived in Burin Newfoundland, Canada. He married Emily Theresa Churchwell Nov 22 1866. So he emigrated to Newfoundland sometime before that. He and Emily had three sons, William George and John (my great grandfather). Emily died shortly after John's birth and Thomas remarried, Elizabeth Cox. Thomas and Elizabeth had a son Joseph born in 1875. Thomas, Elizabeth and his son William and son Joseph left Newfoundland and moved to Halifax Nova Scotia, where a daughter Emily was born. George had died as an infant.

My great grandfather was raised by his mother's family.

I do not know where in England that he was born. I did find a Thomas Dancey born in Leeds but I am having trouble finding a Thomas Dancey emigrating between 1839 and 1866.

The 1841 England census has a 11month old Thomas DANCEY in Uley, Gloucestershire, with possibly his mother Ann aged 30. Both were born in the county.

In 1853 there is an Ann DANCEY aged 50 and a Thomas DANCEY aged 12 arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana from Liverpool on 27 Mar 1853. The passenger list for the Samuel Lawrence says this Ann and Thomas were or Irish origin. Could Thomas have arrived in Canada via the US

I know from the 1901 census that he is stated as being from England so I think that may nullify the New Orleans connection

As for the Crosbie BDM Cd...yes my family is on that CD I have a copy of it :)
