Kelly/Thornley in South Africa
« on: Saturday 24 March 12 09:11 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if someone can help me. My husband's G. Grandfather was James Kelly born 1870 in Chester, Cheshire, England. We have always known that he married Annie Thornley who was born in Hyde Cheshire. We know that he went to South Africa and have photos of him at the diamond mine where he worked. I initially thought he was married over here but when I couldn't find a marriage I did various searches and find an entry for Annie travelling to South Africa (Durban) from Southampton aboard the Durban ship with mother and sister 28 August 1891. Her father Benjamin isn't listed so perhaps he had gone on ahead. I know that James is on the 1891 census over here so when did he travel and also when and where did he marry in South Africa? They had 4 children Charles Colville (My husband's Grandfather) born 1898 Germiston South Africa, Mary 1900 Durban, Philip 1902 Durban and Norah 1912 Durban. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi found a James Kelley born 1868 travelled from London in 1924 to Cape Town South Africa. Tried looking up Jame Kelley on South African archives, lots of results, not sure of correct one. You can try this link and look at the results.http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm200gi.

Then click on the RSA repository box, when it opens type in Kelley James and enter. A list of documents will appear, just click on Result Summary.

Good luck Derek

Thanks Derek. I think it would be nearer the time of their first born in 1898 in Germiston. He died in 1926 and had been there for years. I will have a look and see if I can see anything. Thanks for help, very much appreciated.

Greetings from Australia.
Note: a posting by Julie for Kelly/Parker on 17 October 2005 addresses to Sylvia.
I have just re-connected with rootschat after a number of years absentee. Sorry! Julie - I am Karla Rojo to whom you refer in this post. I am still  researching and wish to confirm that the information about the family of Benjamin and Annie Thornley posted by maidmarianoops on 18 October 2005 is correct. I hold the original birth certificate of Francis, son of Benjamin and Annie,  who was my grandfather. I recently made contact with one of the daughters of Norah Land [nee Kelly] in Johannesburg and I have forwarded a copy by snail mail of all the information I have gathered on the family and particularly on the descendants of Francis here in Australia. Godfrey Giles is another researcher who has also posted information on various web sites but for whatever reason he will not answer any of my emails - his perogative I guess but I wonder why he takes that attitude when all I want is exchanged information. I am happy to fill in any detail I might have to help someone else's research. As this is now 2012 it is possible that you no longer contribute to rootschat but if you happen to read this please make contact with me  either through this site or by email at (*). Thanks and good hunting.

Hello Karla, you have made my day. It  was great to read your messages all those years ago and great to think I can now exchange details. If you get this before I will dig out my information and email you. Julie
