Cemetery identification required please **COMPLETED - Thank You**
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 11:34 BST (UK) »
Have been attempting, to locate my Grandfathers grave. Tried record offices, registers, cemeteries, churches, but so far, I have been unable to locate the grave.

Am hoping someone may recognise the cemetery on the photographs.
Have reason to believe it is close, to or within, Hammersmith / Fulham Borough of London or the Hounslow area.
My Grandfather lived in Shepherds Bush W12, at time of death, and he was Catholic - perhaps this may assist in identifying the burial place.

On the 'kerbstone' is the Stonemasons 'inscription' ;  I am unable to fully read the text - Can anyone help please ?

Any assistance would be well appreciated - am at a loss at what to do next.
Thank You.

Hullo and welcome to rootschat :)

Do you know when  your grandfather was buried there ?  If you had his death date, then a local newspaper might carry a funeral notice which would give the name of the cemetery.

Hi Charlotte

Thanks for reply. Have tried newspaper archives - unfortunately with no success.
He died in 1958 - perhaps that could help with identification?!
Am hoping someone can identify the cemetery or come up with a idea / suggestion  that I haven't yet explored.

A wild guess at the name at the foot of the grave, could be FAREY.  Have you tried looking in phone books for that period for the names of undertakers in the area?  Many local libraries have these.

I thought the mason's name might be MAXEY or RABEY, but I'm fairly sure that the word underneath is Hounslow. I can't find any current monumental masons in Hounslow with a name like that, but of course this was over 50 years ago.

Would you be able to confirm your grandfather's name? I'm reading it as Patrick BUTLER, but it's a bit blurry.

Hounslow local studies library is the nicest and most helpful one I've ever come across- email them and I bet they'll be only too pleased to help.

If you think it may say Hounslow that is............I'm not sure.

Headstone inscription
IN LOVING MEMORY OF
    PATRICK BUTLER
WHO DIED 28th JAN. 1958
   REST IN PEACE

I have attempted to find stonemason with names similar to Rabey, Paney, Laney but came up with nothing.
Haven't tried FAREY but I will do - Thanks Kathb
And will also try MAXEY - Cheers Arthur

I think it says 'HOUNSLOW' - also at the time of Grandfathers death, one of his sons was living in the Hounslow area.
However, I did initially think it said 'H'SMITH' !
I came across Hounslow libray today online - going to give them a ring tomorrow.
Thanks

It is my Dad who eager to trace the grave. He don't use computers and at 80, he ain't right bothered about learning either ! My Dad did attend the funeral but as the years gone by he can't recall any details.
