Sarah Shannon
« on: Wednesday 28 March 12 22:54 BST (UK) »
Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me.  I have found out that my great great grandmother Sarah Shannon was born in Co. Sligo around 1881 (she was 30 in 1911 census).  She married my great great grandfather William Canning (a native of Co.Donegal) in Scotland in 1906.  They had 2 sons whilst in Scotland but had returned to Co. Derry by the time of the 1911 census.  I would be interested in looking further down her line of the family and wondered if anyone had information on the Shannon family, maybe where exactly they lived, or what would have taken Sarah to Scotland.  I wonder did she meet William Canning in Scotland or Ireland?  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Karen

If she married in Scotland the marriage certificate should list the names of both her parents which will be a big help.

It was quite common for people to travel back and forth between Ireland and Scotland.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi Karen

Do you know where Sarah was in 1901 ?

IF she was still in Sligo - this is the only Sarah Shannon - correct age in Sligo in 1901 !!

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Sligo/Templeboy_South/Dunowla/1678818/

This is her in 1911

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Londonderry/Londonderry_Urban/Sloans_Terrace/599988/

SO going by the naming tradition - her second son has the same name as her father.

This is her birth then

Sarah Shannon
13 May 1877
Sligo, Ireland
father - Robert Shannon
mother - Fanny Brett

This is the marriage of Robert Shannon & Fanny Brett

Robert Shannon
1867
District - Dromore West
Vol - 4

Hopefully her marriage cert to William Canning will confirm the above findings.

Tara

Hi Tara,

thanks for taking the time out to help me.  It certainly looks like the 1901 census info you found fits. Right age and as she was born in Co. Sligo there is a good chance she was still there aged 21.  William Cannings father was called John so they must have named their first child after him and the second after her father.  It's great that you were able to find a birth record for Sarah as I now have a surname for her mother too.  Thank you for finding a marriage record for her parents too - this is valuable info to help me in my research.

Regards

Karen

No probs Karen,

Fingers crossed the marriage cert confirms what I found !

By the way I found the marriage of Fanny Brett and Robert Shannon on this site

http://www3.sympatico.ca/wfmcgee/Brett/1800s_Registration/Marriages.htm

Fanny's father was called Henry and she was from Barnacoghil - Robert's father was called Henry and he was fron Dunowla where they still were on the 1901 & 1911 census.

So this will bring you back another generation.

If you google the surname Brett in Sligo there seems to be a lot of people doing trees on them.

Thank you so much Tara.  I am so greatful for the information you have given me.  I can't wait to see what else I can find out now based on what you have told me.  I didn't think it would be possible to get information so far back.

Once again many thanks
