Gibson, before and after 1906
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 17:23 BST (UK) »
This much I know.  Arthur Gibson was born 6/10/1906 in the Sculcoates district (Cottingham).  His father was George William Gibson, who died in 1974 and was born in Hull in 1879.

And now I'm struggling.  On the 1911 there's Arthur Russell Gibson, and it's definitely not him.  A possible George William turned out not to have an Arthur in the family.  There are two possible marriage dates for George William Gibson, 1898 and 1900.

This is turning into a very expensive tree  ;D and it would be good not to have to get Arthur's birth certificate, but I'm stumped, and help would be appreciated.

I use the GRU free 1911 index as it shows birthplaces and there's nothing that sticks out apart from the one you mention above

So I tried George William Gibson and found a William George b 1878 Hull - location Hull

A longshot is George b 1881 Cottingham Common in view of what you say above re: Cottingham

I'm told that he had a brother Stanley and sisters Betty and Muriel, none of whom I've been able to find, at least not with the same mother.

The George (b. Cottingham Common) that Carole found seems to be the right one.

Try searching the 1911 census for Arthur Gibson, age 4, born in Dunswell. This is very near to Cottingham (presumably in Cottingham sub-district which you got from YorkshireBMD). You will find his parents are George William Gibson and Edith Steels (married 1904), though the middle name William is omitted sometimes. Searching FreeBMD there are children Stanley and Betty with Steels as mother's maiden surname born in Sculcoates district.
