1940 census - colleges and universities
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 02:26 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know how colleges and universities were censused?  Were the students counted in their dormitories or were they registered as absent members of  their own families?  I have been looking for my father.  I have found the Enumeration District that includes the college where he was a student at that time, but not only do I not find him, I find no students listed at all.

Has no one else even tried to find a student in 1940?

Thanks RobinBird.

I'll just have to wait for an index, I guess.  I have searched the district which includes the college and two neighboring districts without any luck.  There are no college students listed.  Unfortunately, in his case he couldn't be listed with his family because they were overseas.  Just in case, I checked the "home for missionary children" where he had previously lived, but unsurprisingly he wasn't listed there.  Maybe he is someone who fell through the cracks.

I searched for my mother who was a freshman at the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, and did find the enumeration for the college, but I could only find the college staff and convent sisters. I subsequently found her enumerated with her family 75+ miles away. It says (ab) above her name--meaning absent.

Thanks, OmahaBoy.  That's what I figured but there's no telling what might have been considered his home.  He was not listed with any of the aunts and uncles I have found.  Possibly he could have been included with his older married sister but I don't know where she was in 1940.
