Handley, 1871
« on: Saturday 07 April 12 22:16 BST (UK) »
I can't find members of the Handley family on the 1871 census.  Susannah Handley, born 1811 in Lincoln, is widowed in 1861 and living in Lincoln.  Her husband had been transported to Australia for 7 years in 1848 but there's no sign of him having returned.  I can't find a death for Susannah.  And I can't find her daughter Jane, born in 1846 in Nettleham, Lincs, who married in Hull in 1872.  (I can find her son John.)
I'd be grateful if anyone could look for Susannah and, especially, Jane in 1871.
Godden in East Sussex, mainly Hastings area.
Richards in Lea, Gloucestershire, then London.
Williamson in Leith, Vickers in Nottingham.
Webb in Bildeston and Colchester.
Wesbroom in Kirby le Soken.
Ellington in Harwich.
Park, Palmer, Segar and Peartree in Kersey.

I've looked but can't see any sign of them. Could Susannah have remarried so they are hiding under another surname?

Jan ;)

I have spent some time looking also and zilch.
FreeBMD does have a death of a Susannah in Dec 1866 but she is age 76 so this may be the other Susanah showing in 1851 although she was born c1798.

There is also a death reg for a Susan Handley in Lincoln in 1864. Could this be her? She was down as Susan in 1851.

Just an aside, if Susannah's husband was transported in 1848 who does Joseph aged 1 in 1851 belong to?

Yes, I'd noticed Joseph.  He was actually born (or registered) in the last quarter of 1849, and William set sail for Van Diemen's land in July 1848.  Hmm.
Thanks for the 1864 death, I missed that.  I wonder where Jane was hiding.
