« on: Sunday 08 April 12 12:26 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know what the street number was for the Miner's Arms public house which was in Owen Street in Tipton please?
Also, I would like to know who the publican was around the 1910/1912 period.
Thank you.

 :) Hi treefan,

The address for the Miners Arms was 56 Owen Street.

There is a Henry Ward listed as a beer retailer at this address in 1912.

Hope that helps!

 :) Hi Treefan,

just spotted your other posts re Ward / Coppice Street- thought that I would just add that in 1900 Henry Ward is listed as a beer retailer at 36 Coppice Street.

The Miners Arms was previously known as the Round of Beef - this is the name my family have always known it by and have always called it this even now, although it was knocked down in the 80s. My Great Nan come out of this pub one night and fell over an old fashioned lawn mower that had been left by the door and broke her hip! I have some photos somewhere - and of Coppice Street - but can't put my hand on them at the minute - however I'm not sure if they will be what you are looking for.

Hi Bagpuss1971  ~  Thank you so much for your replies.
So, it seems that my ancestor Henry Ward was the publican of the Miners Arms then  ~  that's great to know for certain.  His 1911 census entry only gave the address with it showing that he worked as a publican at the property which is why I wanted to find out for certain exactly which pub it was.
His 1901 census shows him listed living at 36 Coppice Street with his wife & children. His entry lists him a a publican, working at home, own account. I have looked at the address in other census years when other families lived in the same property but they show the folk listed working in ironworks jobs etc & there were no other entries showing it as being a drinking establishment. I was under the impression that the properties along that part of Coppice Street were all houses (I gleaned that from an old map which showed that the houses were numbered houses & not working properties) so I am wondering whether Henry & his wife Emma may have used there front room as a beer house which I believe was a common practise in old times & these were privately run not needing licences. If anyone can tell me more about this I would love to know please.
Bagpuss1971, if you ever do come across your old photographs of the area including Coppice Street I would love to see them please if you don't mind. As well as learning about the family I enjoy finding out about the area where they lived too & any old pictures would give me an insight into what they would have seen about them in their lives when they were outside of their homes.
Many thanks for your help, it's much appreciated.

 :) Hello again!

The only one that I have access to after the 1912 is 1932,and it is a Marjorie Buxton who has it then - there is no Henry Ward listed in the Tipton area as a beer retailer or licensee.

Apparently the name was changed to the Miners Arms "as a reminder of the past importance of coal mining in Tipton" - I am now wondering if this may have happened around the time that your ancestor moved there - again I am so half soaked I cannot put my hand to the books and pictures that I need, but bear with me and I shall see what I can get hold of!

I only walked past Coppice Street today - it is nothing like it used to be in the old pictures - I do know that the cobbled street from Coppice Street survives now at the Black Country Museum along one of the streets in the village.I have an interest in Coppice Street too as my ancestors lived there!

Hi again  ~  I am quite a sentimental person so I like the idea that the name of the pub was changed to reflect the importance of mining in the area. I have to say though that it's former name that you told me about tickled me  ~  I have never heard of a pub called The Round of Beef before. Have you any idea where that name originated from?

I had no idea that the old cobbled stones of Coppice Street were taken up & re-used at the Black Country Museum. I did visit there about 25 years ago & to be honest with you I don't remember it very clearly now. Perhaps I should try to make my way to visit there again & I could make a point of looking out for the Coppice Street cobbles so that I could literally walk in my ancestors footsteps!  :)

:D I never thought of that - I have walked along them cobbles tons of times at the museum!!

I don't have any ideas as to where the "Round of Beef" name came from,it always makes me laugh too!

I have just looked in a Black Country Breweries book and Henry Ward is there at the Miners Arms in 1914.

That's great  ~  he was the landlord there for at least four years or more then.
Thank you.
