May as well start looking into this James BRUCE and Annie formerly GUNN :-)

Marriage of daughter Ettie
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0l7h/

Can't find a birth for Ettie. Is "Ettie" a diminuative of Elizabeth?

EDIT: Looks like Ettie's name is Esther Gunn BRUCE
http://www.presbyterian.org.nz/archives/marriageregisters/palmerston1.htm

And there's mention of an Esther GUNN aged 45 years living in Thurso in the 1841 census

Annie GUNN, who married a James BRUCE in 1865.

[...]

So maybe a family connection, hopefully an elder sister. Worth looking into at least.

Maybe not.

Here is an Ann GUNN arriving in 1862 aged 25 years which gives a birth year c.1837

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-266-11625-68598-49?cc=1609792

According to the passenger manifest (which may or may not be right) she hails from Sutherland, which is next to Caithness.

She may or may not be the Ann GUNN who married James Bruce in 1865.

She's travelling with a Margaret McDONALD

Part of the jigsaw or not....

Beg

Hi again...

Monica (from the Caithness board) has pm'd me some info showing that this Ann GUNN b.14 Jul 1835 is from Loth, Sutherland.

And she doesn't have a sister Mary.

And the date of marriage given for this Ann GUNN to James Sutherland BRUCE matches the date from the Presbyterian marriage register for Waikouaiti.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=rpatrick&id=I15942

Of course this is someone else's research but you assume that they've got it right.

Mary and Ann may still be cousins but for the moment it's back to the drawing board :-)

------

You said in an earlier post...

I have just found a listing of early NZ families that shows a Donald, Mary, Isabella and John Gunn. I have only seen the list so far so don't know what the relationships were.

Just wondering where you saw the list and has anything come of it.

Regards
Beg

Hi Russ

You can easily access the "online tree"  (at the ancestry World Connect website) for the aforementioned "Annie (Ann) GUNN m. James Sutherland BRUCE" :

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

GUNN
Donald

(on next page)

Death Place :   >> enter "New Zealand"

Ann GUNN's birthplace is listed as "West Helmsdale, Kildonan Parish, Sutherland, Scotland -- d/o of George GUNN and Marion POLSON".

Four children of Ann GUNN and James BRUCE shown on tree as all having been born at Palmerston, Otago.

Hi again,

Hasn't been mentioned in the thread so I'm just wondering if you've looked at the probate for Andrew JONES.

Would be nice if it mentioned siblings or cousins or in-laws

JONES Andrew - Hawkesbury - Settler - 1896

New to all this...
My GG Grandfather Andrew Jones, born abt 1837 near Plymouth, Devonshire, arrived in NZ abt 1862. He married May Gunn in 1863 at Waikouaiti Otago. He died in 1896 in Waikouaiti.
Mary Gunn was born abt 1840 in Thurso Scotland and arrived in NZ abt 1860. She died in 1921 also in Waikouaiti.
We have copies of their death certificates giving their length of time in NZ and also their daughter Mary Christina’s birth certificates giving their birth details.

Hi

I believe that when Andrew and Mary died the registration would have included details of their parents, subject to the informant knowing, do the death certificates have that information or is that only on the printout?

Andy

The death certificates and the copies of the record for both Andrew and Mary have the parents recorded as unknown, at least by their eldest son Henry. So not herlp there.

Have now checked the actual marriage register for Andrew and Mary. To recap

Andrew Jones and Mary Gunn were married 30th December 1863 in the Hawkesbury (Waikouaiti)Presbyterian Church. The witnesses to the marriage were a Charles Hubbard and a Charles McGregor. Anyone know anything about these two gentlemen. I have never come across the names before.
