"An Illustrated History of South Africa"
« on: Tuesday 10 April 12 11:55 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters

Bit of a long shot ....... but does anyone have a copy of "An Illustrated History of South Africa" by Alan Frederick Hattersley, published 1969?

It's available only in snippet view in Google Books but refers to a tantalising reference on page 129 to my ancester, the Rev Mr J Weaving,  who founded a school in SA.

Is there any more than just this reference in the book?

Would love to know!

regards

You could try ordering it on interlibrary loan through your local public library?

There is no further reference to him in the Hattersley book but perhaps this will help:

Philip, Peter:  "British Residents at the Cape 1795 - 1819", published by David Philip, Cape Town, 1981:

Weaving, John, born in England, arrived 1797 in 'Sir Edward Hughes', aged 24, schoolmaster.
1798 list of English persons:  Mr W, at Capt. Campel's (sic).
5.1.1799 signs loyal address to Gen. Dundas.
1800 at 24 Berg St.
5.8.00 ditto.
13.12.00 'J W, A B, late of Pembroke College, Oxford, respectfully acquaints the parents, guardians etc. of young gentlemen under his charge, that the Christmas vacation will commence the 20th inst. and expire January 11th ensuing".
3.11.01 Permission to Remain granted to J W from England.
22.1.02 J W 'did in January 1801 purchase a house & premises no 24 Berg St of Miss Tin Birgin (sic), now Mr La Harpe, for the sum of 25 000 guilders remaining on interest and 3 000 guilders ready money';  he appeals against a decision to charge him double transfer duty.   Granted by Dundas.   Bought 24 Berg from J C de la Harpe (formerly owned by Anna. Cath. Elis. Ten Bergen) (Transfer of Ownership 26.2.02) & sold it to J Muller (Transfer of Ownership 11.10.04).

There is a see also ref to the Quarterly Bulletin of the South African Library, Cape Town, XXXIV, no 2, but I do not have access to it.

Regards
Sandy

Dear Derek, Graham and Sandy

Thank you so much for your responses to my query - especially the very exciting reference from "British Residents at the Cape 1795 - 1819" - your help is much appreciated.
