BRAND family of Kent
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 03:27 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the parents of William Brand, born 1807 Maidstone, Kent. I believe they were Henry and Mary (?). I can't seem to find anything about Henry and wonder if his correct name could be Brann or Brandt?  I found in the IGI of family search a marriage between Henry Brann and Mary Cheesman 4 Dec 1792 in All Saints, Maidstone and wonder if this is the couple I am searching for? I think there is also a sister Ann (b 1805 St Alphage, Canterbury... same parents).
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers Gensnr  :)

Hi Betty, many thanks for your quick reply. Yes, I would love any info on this family. All the dates fit so presume my William Brand is in fact William Brann. Any info on where his parents came from?
Cheers Gensnr  :)

Maidstone, All Saints

Children of Henry & Mary BRANN

1793 11th Jan, Henry, born 13th Dec 1792
1794 20th Apr, Mary Ann, born 27th Mar
1799 8th Sept, Sarah, born 24th Aug
1810 28th Feb, Susan, born 28th Jan

The 1793 baptism is the earliest for any BRANN at All Saints, so no sign of Henry snr (these transcripts are from 1770 to 1812)
I don't have marriages for All Saints.
There are a few CHEESMAN baptisms, only one for a Mary: 1770 24th Aug, parents James & Margaret CHEESMAN. (Nothing for CHEESEMAN)

There are two baptisms in Canterbury, St Alphage, parents Henry & Mary BRAN.
Hannah, 31st Jan 1802
Ann, 6th Oct 1805

Quite a few CHEESEMAN/CHEESMAN baptisms in Canterbury.
A Mary CHEESEMAN baptised 8th Nov 1767, St Dunstan, parents Carpenter & Ann.
Two Mary CHEESMANs, in 1752 & 1784, so probably not likely.

I hope something there is useful :)

Many thanks Betty for the info, which adds a lot to my family tree. Any clues as to why my William ended up as Brand and not Brann? I have a copy of the official register of his marriage (to Sarah Dennis in 1830
Saint Mary, Newington, Surrey) and he's definitely noted as Brand.
I searched the IGI records and discovered that Henry (born 11th Jan 1793)  died soon after his birth and was buried 20 Jan 1793 at All Saints. How sad for the parents.
William and Sarah's children include the names Henry and Mary, presumably named after William's parents.
Once again Many thanks Cheers  :)

You are welcome, Gensnr, glad I could help :)

I think it's quite possible that Surrey ears, not used to the Kent accent, misheard Brann as Brand ;D
Brann is a fairly common Kent name, I've got a few in my tree, although they are from Wittersham, which is South Kent, not far from the Sussex border.

I have only just come across Roots Chat and I wonder if you could assist.
My GG Grandmother was Margaret Brann (Brand) born circ. 1817 (Maidstone), mother Mary.
Margaret was to marry Robert Hulland and I am descended from their younger son Alfred.

My father and his siblings always said that his grandfather (Alfred) was brought up by the Cheeseman family but have never been able to substantiate it after much research.

Seems it is now very possible, the Cheeseman family we understand were department store owners of Lewisham and Maidstone any information would be great.

Many Thanks
Malcolm
