Marabel Hartley Webster, Richard Webster, Ethel Jenkins

I'm new to this, so I hope I've done this correctly and adhere to your rules, apologies if not.

I'm looking for any help regarding the people in the subject line, (there's quite a story to go with this, but will leave that for another day) what I know so far is:

Marabel Hartley Webster was reportedly born in Joseph Street, Palmerston North, MWT, New Zealand on the 19th July 1908 ( It states New Zealand and the DOB on her death certificate, but can't find her on your bdmhistorical site) to parents Richard and Ethel (m.s. Jenkins) Webster.

Ethel was born 1879 in NZ (Reg No: 1879/16466) they married 1907 (Reg No: 1907/2388) she gave birth to a baby NR 1910 (Reg No: 1910/13724) which died 4 days later (Reg No: 1910/4907) as a result of this Ethel died 2 weeks later (Reg No: 1910/4929).

Richard Webster was born In England around 1885, moved to NZ in the early 1900's, after Ethel's death left NZ on the Ionic arriving in Sydney Australia on 6th May 1916, there's no evidence of Marabel travelling with him, there's a big gap now, as the next details I can find is that she had a child in Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1932, it's believed she was brought to the UK by her English grandparents sometime during these years, I'm trying to fill in this gap.

Can I ask if anyone can help with what my next steps may be, does NZ have online censuses or voters roles I could view? Or any other routes I could possibly take? Any help whatsoever would be gratefully appreciated.

There is a Hartley Webster in NZ who has a son Richard born 1884 dies 1954 (on ancestry)

Do you know Richards death date?

Maybe Richards parents, Marabels GParents are in NZ as well

who is a chef..so may be same person..he is married to a Kathleen

To answer your questions, Richard was born in Cheshire England around 1885 and died in Lincolnshire England in 1946. His parent's are English also, they ran a pub in Altrincham, his mother's maiden name was Hartley, hence Marabel's middle name.
I have no evidence of a Kathleen, but giving Richard's track record theres certainly a possibility lol.
I know Richard joined the Australian army in 1917 but was discharged after 6 months due to ill health.
He also fathered a child, in New South Wales in 1918, it states they were married, but the mother was married to another man at the time. It also states on the Birth certificate that Richard is a chef.

Does it show Marabel at the boarding house in 1911?

Hi Bryan,

The electoral roll will only show those enrolled to vote.

To be a voter in 1911, minimum age was 21 years (I think), so Marabel would not be entitled to appear on the roll until 1929?

There are several Websters appearing on our ER with Hartley as one of their given names, possibly connected? You can search the index here with free access

Marabel's birth does not appear on BDM site, as you say, however it is shown on birth microfiche thrid quarter 1908 in Palmerston North.

I have emailed BDM asking them to check why it is not there. Hopefully will have a reply within a week.

Mmm ... you've said that " Richard WEBSTER was born in Cheshire around 1885"     

I went in search of his parents names - because you hadn't included them here (by name) , and yet they supposedly played some role in raising ? Marabel ??

[Eventually turned to viewing the Australian Army record for Richard, in which he stated he was born "Bolton, Lancashire" and gave his N-o-K as "Thomas WEBSTER (father), resident in Cheshire in 1917" :  ]

So from 1891 & 1901 UK census returns I am assuming Richard's parents were Thomas and Sarah ?

*  Have you maybe checked in 1911 for  the whereabouts of Thomas and Sarah ... (I haven't managed to find them in UK).

If they came to New Zealand for the purpose to taking Marabel back to UK, then there might be a shipping record / passenger list, for them returning to the UK.
