James Garrard LANDER, b c. 1801
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 15:14 BST (UK) »
What we know - he was a carpenter,  married to a Jane Eddy, had several children (incl Henry Garrard c 1827, Robert c 1833, Isabella c 1834, Sara Jane c 1835) married a Hannah Lamb in London and had three more children (John Lamb, James and Eliza) before emmigrating to South Australia. His father was Henry LANDER, mother's name not known. The family story is that he was Cornish and that most of the children were baptised in Cornwall.

Isabella and the children of Hannah Lamb all arrived in Australia.

Any help with James Garrard's birth, ancestors or children who (may have) remained in England would be welcome.

1841 census has this:
Reference HO107, Piece 684, Book/Folio 10/16, Page 26
St Pancras, Marylebone, Middlesex

Lander, James  M  35  Carpenter  N
Lander, Sarah  F  65  N
Lander, Hannah  F  25  Y
Lander, Henry  M  14  Y
Lander, Sarah  F  10  N
Lander, Robert  M  8  N
Lander, Isabella  F  6  N
Lander, John  M  15 months  Y

(Y/N refers to the question Born in County?)
Ages were rounded down to a multiple of 5 years.

I would hazard a guess that Sarah is the mother of James?

Thank you very much for the information that you have provided. I am amazed and delighted at the promptness of the response. Of course you've just given me yet another name to seek further information for: John Garrad LANDER.  :D

Now, I also must start searching for a Garrad / Garrard link.

As you are a Garrad, do you know of the link to Henry (and his sons? James and John) LANDER? Yes, that's a bit cheeky of me!

And regarding spelling, most of the  documents I have found with James' middle name spell it Garrard (except for a couple with Gerard/Gerrard!). I'm pretty sure I have something in his own handwriting and will have to go searching. It is definitely spelled with all three R's on his death certificate.

This site is brilliant.

My surname gets mis-spelled all the time! So I'm not surprised ;D
(Even some RootsChatters get it wrong ::) ;D )

I have no Lander names in my tree.

My Garrad line comes from Suffolk/Essex - nobody came West until the mid 1870's.

Oh dear, you are not really from "the West?"  :o My dad's grandparents have strong Cornish heritage; my mum's grandparent's trace to Devon. Obviously somewhere along the line the smarter ones came out to Aus  ;D
Poor you!
And you have no Lander in your family tree! Even poorer you! Just shows you can't be a truly Cornish  ::)
(Now, if I can just locate my second head it can tell me how to convey a "roll over the floor laughing" message)
Thanks again for your information.

Grandfather was born in Dorset; worked in Devon & Wiltshire, before settling in Somerset! ;D

My father & brothers all born Somerset!

Hey Guys, I know that you havent chatted on here for soooooo long but I have recently been doing a lot of family research with my grandparents and this site and chat really helped me discover even more of my ancestry and family history.

I am a descendant of Henry Lander from Cornwall who's son is James Garrard Lander (1801) and Hannah Lamb (1815) who son is John Lamb Lander (1840) who married Sarah Lea Lander (1843) (who's parents are Geroge Lea and Caroline Whitmore) and who's daughter is Charlotte (Caroline) Whitmore Lea Lander (1860) who married Benjamin Cornish III Jrn (1825) who had Harrold Cornish (1910) who had my grandfather Peter Cornish (1947).

Anyways, Caroline Whitmore Lea Lander wrote an article for the Adelaide Chronicle 23/2/1937 page 555, which gives detail into her Lea/Whitmore ancestry.

My Cornish roots come from Devon and my Lander roots come from Cornwall. As an Aussie telling people that my last name is Cornish so i obviously come from Cornwall is so ironic and just hilarious. But now i know that i actually do come from Cornwall, thank god!

Also, My Gandfather and I would love to know what you have in James Garrard Lander's handwriting rossl42.
