Photos to be dated
« on: Friday 13 April 12 14:03 BST (UK) »
My relatives in Montana have sent me copies of two photos that my Great Aunt Elizabeth took with her when she immigrated to the USA in 1898.  I think they could be her mother and father who would have been 52 and 56 respectively in 1898.  Based on their clothing and picture style can anyone offer any suggestions as to the likely date of these pictures?

I'm afraid there isn't much here that's dateable. These look like over sketched enlargements of  a CdeV.
The man's collar looks 1890's - early 1900's & that's about it really.

What do you mean by oversketched.  Do you think these are more painted than photo enlargements as we kniow them today?

Photos could be enlarged to any size, however the end result wasn't that good so the image was over-sketched to bring out the detail.

Also known as overpainting. Before the invention of the photographic enlarger a copied photo lost sharpness. Overpainting became popular in the 1890s and continued until about the 1920s.
