Hi
Can I just clarify the name of his last ship, its not 'Henry Daring' but rather HMS Daring. To find out about his career before entering the CG service you need to consult Daring's Description Book at the National Archives, Kew (ADM 38/7928). Not only will it provide a list of the ships he served on, but also a physical description and a place of birth. However, I have found the birth date and place for William in ADM 175/53 pdf 187. He was born 15 December 1824, Barnstable, Devon.
Re Thomas Gaughen he entered the CG Service on the 23 July 1831, signing up at Belmullett, this suggests to me that he was a local man, not from Devon, but I could be wrong!
23 July 1831 to Bridport
7 Aug 1833 to Beer
31 Jan 1837 promoted to Commissioned Boatman remained at Beer.
26 Oct 1850 to Brandon (William Stoat was serving at this station at the same time (ADM 175/19 pdf 170)
17 July 1862 to Barrow
31 Jan 1865 Superanuated
Just checked the CoY website, and there is the death of an Agnes Stoat, wife of James Stoat CG, 4 Feb 1831 Dingle, kerry.
