Hi Mick,
MURROE as its called runs along the border of County Limerick and Tipperary. I had never heard of the name Caplis before so i tried the 1911 census http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/ you can also try the 1901 census but there were 98 Caplis family members in the Murroe area, all of them within 10 miles of each other, both in County Limerick and Tipperary. This is most unusual as there were none in the rest of Ireland. They must have really loved their place.
How was your grandfather allowed to go to the States !!!

Thanks PJ he must have been quick on his feet  ;D

my grandparents only live in the USA for 2 or 3 years then moved to Leigh near Manchester,  i think my dad was about 3 or 4 at this time, he had one brother john both my dad and uncle are now not with us.

I wish I had taken more notice when my dad told me about his mam and dad

me and my partner moved to Sligo in Ireland some years ago and now that I am unemployed i am going to make an effort to go to Murroe and see if any Caplis's are  still there.

Mick  :)

Hi again Mick
Tried  061 phone directory and there are 8 Caplis families still in that area especially in the Newport area . You should have no trouble linking them with yours . Try writing to them first youd never know someone might have the tree done .
Then go down there and tell them there is a big world out there     ;D

Hi

1835 Census of the United Parishes of Newport and Birdhill lists four Caplis families:-

David Caplis at Chapel Lane.  6 males + 2 females
Richard Caplis at Newross & Ahane.  3 males + 1 female
William Caplis at Newross & Ahane.   4 males + 2 females
John Caplis at Knockacullin.   4 males + 6 females

It appears Caplis were plentiful in the Newport area even in the 1830s!

Cheers
