Hurlston/Hurlstone
« on: Friday 20 April 12 08:52 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information about a Dorothy Hurlston/Hurlstone.  She married Charles Holmes in 1916 in Reading; (I have found the parish and marriage records) and I believe she was born in Cookham, Berkshire c 1895 but she appears on no Census at all.  I have found the birth records of all her and Charles' children (Leslie Charles was my father-in-Law) in Lancashire but no other records to do with her whatsoever.  Any suggestions please.

Does the marriage certificate indicate she was a spinster?
What was her father's name?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Why do you think she was born in Cookham, the birth Trish found looks favourable.  :-\

Possible Birth Reg FreeBMD;
Dorothy HURLSTON, Sept 1895, Southampton, 2c 34

Trish :)

Who were the witnesses to the wedding?

As it is such an unusual surname I think I would be buying the 1895 birth cert so that I could eliminate it.  I can't see any evidence of that Dorothy on census either.  ???

Hi

I was hoping they would help  ;D

There is a Charles Henry Downes bn c1886 Reading who worked at the biscuit factory in Reading according to census.  Can't see an E Downes that would link with him though.

HI
I'm updating my request for help over Dorothy Hurlston/Hurlstone.

I have now got her birth certificate and, as thought, there is no father's name.  Her Mother's name was Laura Hurlston and was living at Anglesea Road, Chapel, Southampton at the time she registered Dorothy's birth in 1868.

I can still find no other information on Dorothy until her marriage to Charles in 1915 registered in Reading, Berkshire.  I have found her mother on the 1901 census visiting her aunt Kate Gardner, in Great Wolford with her grandmother Grace Smith and on the 1911 census working as a servant in the Streatley, Berkshire area, but as is normal her year of birth differs and is down as 1871/2. No Dorothy on either Census.

My question this time is :-  were there any mother and baby homes/children's homes in the Southampton area c1895? (I wondered if Dorothy lived in one until she was able to leave) and did children in these homes get included in Census records?

Any help at all would be really really helpful.

My thanks in advance
