Aston Juxta Birmingham marriage lookup – 1785
« on: Friday 20 April 12 15:06 BST (UK) »
Would any kind soul be able to look up the marriage at Aston Juxta Birmingham on 15 March 1785 between Jeremiah HURST and Elizabeth (?)HODSON for me?

I have basic details and wondered if there was anything further recorded such as age, status, occupation, witnesses, home parishes of newlyweds etc. in the register.

They are 4xgreat grandparents.

Many thanks,

Rick Glanvill

Welcome to rootschat Rick.

I can't help with a specific lookup of the parish records, but I think you'll only get witnesses at this time.

If you don't get any takers, you could always contact the Birmingham Library (I think) - they should be able to locate this for you and send you a copy for a modest fee, or maybe for free as they probably send it electronically these days.

Can I ask where you got their names and date of marriage from? The IGI?

Yes, familysearch, hence my desire to check original register. Thanks for the suggestion re Library. I haven't seen the register so wasn't aware what is typical for its entries.

I just checked some of my copies of marriage entries from the area. They are later than yours and give witnesses, but I'm not sure what an 1785 entry shows .... but contact the library. As you have a date and place of marriage, it will be an easy search for them. Good luck.

Yes, Ruskie, I contacted them Local Studies Library yesterday. Also found Jeremiah Hurst in apprenticeship records training as an engraver; he became a jeweller eventually.

Is there mention of Jeremiah's father in his apprenticeship records?

(I take it your aim is to progress back through the generations?)

Sadly not, just the master and the master’s profession/domicile. I'm not even certain he is originally from Warwickshire.

Jeremiah has a distinctive name - have you done a general check on the IGI for any likely candidates?
Unfortunately we all come to such dead ends eventually which is very frustrating.

Yes, and I have a few candidate Jeremiah Hursts I'm pursuing in parish records, trade directories and elsewhere. I'm also attempting to see whether the master engraver to whom he was apprenticed had the status to attract talent from another part of the country, or had a family/local connection.

Cheers,

Rick
