NEWELL Rathfriland and MAYNE marriages.
« on: Saturday 21 April 12 15:25 BST (UK) »
I wonder could anyone give me any information whatsoever about a JAMES NEWELL, Castle Hill, Rathfriland {Parish of Drumgath}
He was a Tanner in Castle Hill in 1824 & 1846  -  Post Office Trade Directories.
Two of his daughters married two Mayne brothers. The two Mayne brothers were from Rehaghey, Aughnacloy, Co.Tyrone.

As far as I can see from 'The Belfast News-Letter' :-

Anne Newell married William Harriott Mayne on 6thOct 1829. Married by a Rev. John Whyte(White) - Rev. John White(Whyte) was the minister of the 1st Presbyterian Church in Rathfriland - Auld Kirk 1813-1836

Elizabeth Newell married Nathaniel Mayne on 7th May 1830

I would love to find out how many children JAMES NEWELL had and what his wife's name was or even her christian name.

With very many thanks, if anyone can help in any way or give me any ideas of were to look.

Is there a graveyard attached to the church that I have mentioned above  or were would he and his family be likely to be buried.

Lynn.

Thanks Jim,   your doing well here.  When I Google Castle Hill, Rathriland I'm finding a very old building there with a hugh hop like thing sticking up. I wonder if that may have been a Tannery as he was a Tanner.

Thanks Jim,  I've found rosdavies site very helpful and very informative.
What I would like to find now would be birth and death dates and try and piece to-gether the family of JAMES NEWELL of Castle Hill, Rathfriland.
Did he live, I wonder, on Castle Hill or was there a factory on Castle Hill etc.
At the moment I am just finding the Three daughters :-  of JAMES NEWELL

ANNE Newell who married  William Harriott Mayne on 6th Oct 1829 and is buried in Clonallon Graveyard, Warrenpoint with her husband, but the writing on the gravestone is very well weathered.

ELIZABETH Newell who married Nathaniel Mayne on 7th May 1830

MARY Newell who married John Hopkins. She died 3rd Nov 1880 in Belfast, and is buried in Hillsborough graveyard. Her husband died 27th March 1858.

I wonder if JAMES NEWELL was killed in the war but I haven't followed that up as yet.

If any one can add to this for me or make any corrections whether it be to dates or spelling of places etc. I should be very grateful.

Lynn.

 Hi,
Have you any number for the house on Castle Hill? There was a tannery where Iveagh primary school is  now, and would have only been 100 metres from Castle Hill. If you look at google earth you will see how near the school is to Castle Hill. There was also another tannery at School Rd. , The Commons, about 400 metres from Castle Hill. There is a graveyard at First Rathfriland Presbyterian Church.
 Cheers, Sam.
