Searching for old places
« on: Monday 23 April 12 14:21 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a place that in 1903 was called Stable Court, Newmains. Does anyone know if it is still there and if so where in Newmains it is. I have tried several old maps but I must have not read them correctly.Thank you for any help.

Wiki has this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newmains

I would suggest that 'Stable Court' may have been a courtyard entered by an alley way off a main street. It seems logical that this one (or a part of it) would have either once been, or still was, used for stabling horses. But that is just a guess.  ;) Many such places have disappeared over the years due to unsanitary conditions.

Have you checked any of the maps on the NLS website?

Where did you get the address from? If you give me the name of the people who lived there I will try to find them in the 1901 census, and from this we might be able to narrow down where Stable Court was.

As far as I know Stable Court was slum housing for the workers at Coltness Iron Works, both the works and the houses have been demolished for many years.

Uggy, I will post the PM you sent me, in case others may be able to help  ;):

All I have is information from a PM that there was a MARTIN born and lived at 12 STABLE COURT
NEWMAINS in Sept 1903. I don't have a way to confirm or deny so I posted in hope.

Uggy, don't you have a first name for your Martin? You could check Scotlands People for the birth. Also the 1901 census. Maybe ask the person who sent you the PM if they have any more information.  :-\

I had a quick (not thorough) look on the 1901 census for a surname Martin living in Newmains but got no results. I need to expand the search I think.
I'm not sure if Cambusnethan would be the correct registration district for births in Newmains, but looking at Scotlands People, there are 6 births registered there in 1903. Without a name how do you know who you're looking for?  :-\

Just checked the 1901 for Cambusnethan (I don't know where Cambusnetan finishes and Newmains starts  ;)) and there are a few Martins there but none living in Stable Court.
There are 4 Martins on the 1901 who say they were born in Newmains, but all are living elsewhere.

Of course the 1911 isn't available for Scotland yet ...  :-\

Hi,

I've you look at Scotlands Places here http://www.rootschat.com/links/0lgl/ (I've shortened the link for convenience!), you can play about with an interactive parish map.  It shows that Newmains fell within Cambusnethan Parish.

Best wishes
