Help finding 19th centuary Royal Marine service records
« on: Thursday 26 April 12 19:45 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Through mapping my family tree i've uncovered that quite a few of my ancestors served in the Military. I've had a great success up till now but recently traced my x3 Great Grandfather and the 1861 & 1871 show he was in the Royal Marines / Navy.

The 1861 census gives his rank as Private, Royal Marines. The '71 census says "Ships Corporal" followed by either R/N or R/M.

His name was John Scott, born about 1838 in Gilling / Richmond, Yorkshire.

Now i've searched the National archives online records but can't seem to find his service records. Has anyone else has similar issues?

Ship's Corporal is a Navy rank rather than Marines.
It's possible he served in both of course, but looking at RN records there are two documents that seem to be him:
