1841/1851 Census - Tunbridge Wells
« on: Thursday 19 May 05 11:54 BST (UK) »
I am looking for Robert and Rebecca Neal on either the 1841/1851 census.  I can't be sure of their address at the time, but in 1861, Rebecca Neal was living at No 3 Victoria Terrace, Tunbridge wells and was described as the House Proprietor, so I'm hoping she hadn't moved.
Rebecca was born in Marden in 1781, I don't have any birth details for Robert.
Robert may have died in either 1840 or 1859, so I would be interested to see whether rebecca was described as a widow on either census as it would help me to narrow down the year of death for Robert.
Any information from either census would be very much appreciated.

Here's the entry for Rebecca on the 1851 census:
ref HO107 1614 folio 321: Varney's Lane, Tunbridge Wells
Rebecca Neal head widow age 70 retired laundress born Marden
Lydia Arnold visitor age 12 born Tunb Wells
(the Arnold family were living next door to Rebecca)
So it would appear that Robert had died before 1851, so 1840 looks promising.
xx Carol.

Here's Robert and Rebecca on the 1841 census:
ref HO107 463-08 folio 20: Diggens Lane, Tunbridge Wells
Robert Neal age 60 ag lab
Rebecca do age 60
Charlotte do age 24
Ann Russell age 19 F S (female servant)
all born in county.
So Robert died between 1841 and 1851, it's narrowed the span of years to look, but rules out both of your suggested options.
