Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

If I'm looking at the right family, I can see Emily DAVIS age 67 with her daughter Emily age 37 living in Elliott Place in 1851.

The description of the enumeration district says,

All that part of the Parish of Alverstoke which is comprised in Bingham or in New Town including,
Richard Street
York Terrace
Henry Street
Charles Street
Joseph Street
St John's Place
Elliott    "
The houses in Stoke Road
Grove Field
Grove Buildings and
Chester Place
Holly St

On this map I can find some of these streets etc. in Newtown (Just below the large Gosport word).

I found an old town plan of the area,

https://maps.nls.uk/view/229916130

Which shows Elliott Place to be some houses at the end of Stoke Road.  :)

Here is a side-by-side view,

and looking at G... Street view I think it's possible that the houses might still be there. If so that would be a really lucky find in Gosposrt as most of it has been rebuilt.

Regards,
Daisy

Wow, I did not expect such an informative reply and so quickly too.
I really appreciated the linked map/photo.  How clever to be able to move the cursor around over the map and watch it identify details on the photo or vice- versa.
I have managed to save and print off the two slightly enlarged corresponding images of the area in question.
I also have a copy of the larger map but it doesn't show Elliott Place but what it does show is a local school called St matthews and i notice that this now appears to be an academy.
My main interest remains John Edward davis  whose mother you correctly identified.  He had a long career in the RN and now I need to build on his roots and find out more of that career.
Thank you again.
Regards
John

Apologies, I’m very late to this thread and new to the site (I registered after reading the post). Isaac Munday (d.1828) and Frances Byerley (d.1829) were my great great great great grandparents. Their grandson (son of Frances Munday, 1789-1864) was Gosport Town Crier up to his death 1901. Feel free to contact me via the site to connect.
