The Buffs in Hong Kong?
« on: Friday 27 April 12 15:39 BST (UK) »
My grandfather, Charles Evans, Served with The Buffs, 2nd Battalion from 1899 until 1911. Does anyone know anything  about the period 1909-1911 when this battalion was in Hong Kong? My grandfather stayed on in Hong Kond to eventually become the Head of dtectives at Mongkok police station in Nathan Rd

Their regimental museum has been absorbed by the National Army Museum, I believe - might be worth asking them what info they have (there might be a regimental history or a book of memoirs or something if you're lucky)

This query might be better off on the Armed Forces forum.
But what is it exactly that you're looking for? If it's just general background information then a good regimental history is a good starting point, start by searching you're local library if you have a good one (I know my local one has several reg. histories)

2nd Btn were in Hong Kong from 1908-10 according to my sources, so small discrepancy there.
They were in Dover 1902-07 after returning from the Boer War and were then briefly in South Africa again 1907-08.

After Hong Kong, they moved to Singapore 1910-13.
Name interests: Boulton, Murrell, Lock, Croxton, Skinner, Blewett, Tonkin, Trathen.

Many thanks for your reply. Assumed 1911 as that was when grandpa left the regiment and stayed in Hong Kong. Have tried local library but to no avail. Going into Melbourne next week so may have more luck at The State.
