find a 1866 pub?
« on: Thursday 03 May 12 11:19 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a 1866 public house in Pillory St Nantwich Cheshire.
my grandfather was a publican in Pillory street nantwich between 1869 to 1871
from my uncles birth certifcate - he was born in pillory st Nantwich Jan 1869 - father publican. (Robert Wadkins)
on 1871 census Robert Wadkins occupation is 'Publican out of buiness' and he is living with his in laws.
I have been to Cheshire Archives in Chester but they cant help. Robert isnt in Kellys Directory. He didnt need a licence at this time so I am stuck. Does any one have any ideas how I might find out the name of the pub in pillory st he was in?

Hi ZKT

He was a licensed victualler - according to report of his Bankruptcy proceedings
He was adjudicated  Bankrupt in May 1869 and spent time in Debtors gaol, and discharged in July 1869

No mention of the establishment in either report though...

Cheers

Looking at oogle map for Pillory St Nantwich Museum is on that street.  Maybe contact them see if they have any ideas.  It looks a very old narrow street.  Good luck  :)

In Morris & Co.'s Directory & Gazetteer of Cheshire, 1874 there is a "George & Dragon" in Pillory Street, and two Beer Retailers.

On the 1877 1:2,500 map there are three Public Houses and one Inn at the north end of Pillory Street. The present day "White Horse" is one of them.

John Wright must have died by 1871 but Ann is still at the White Horse

1871 - RG10/3713/29/3 - "White Horse", Pillory St, Nantwich

It seems as though Robert had already been an unsuccessful landlord in London and moved to Nantwich to try again but failed, thus serving time in prison for being in debt.He was the landlord of the Golden Lion 3 Pillory Street Nantwich, now demolished/
