trying to find more information on John Scanlon married to Ellen lynch.

I have been working on my fathers side of the family which has proved to be very difficult until recently when i have had the opportunity to make contact with an aunt. I have a lot of information of the scanlons here in the united states but i seem to have hit a dead end in ireland. my great,great,great grandfather john scanlon was born in Kerry ireland as well as his wife Ellen lynch. the only information i have is john was born about 1808 and died about 1880 in lawckavanna Pennsylvania and Ellen was born about 1808 in Kerry and died about 1872 in newark oh. Her parents names are Dennis I lynch and Catherine sheahan. any suggestions on how to trace further back would be very much appreciated.

Do you have any idea what part of Co. Kerry John and Ellen lived, or if they married in Ireland, or had any of their children here ?

1808 is a little too early for many of the parish records, but a couple of areas do have records that far back. Most of the available RC and Church of Ireland parish records for Co. Kerry are available free on www.irishgenealogy.ie

father's name doesn't quite match but it's close Dennis vs Daniel... a possible baptism for Ellen in Killarney parish ?

There are baptisms listed for several John Scanlons around 1808, but it could be difficult to figure out if any of these married Ellen Lynch without some further clues - e.g. where in Co. Kerry your Scanlons lived, or names of John's parents..

John and Ellen had 7 children. most of them i dont have much information on just information i have been given from my aunt. but here are there names and all of the information i have:

john patrick scanlon b about 1844 kerry ireland died feb 20 1923 newark ohio usa

Elizabeth Scanlon born 1849 no location died apr 13 1903 newark oh
Honorah Elizabeth Scanlon born 1849 kerry ireland died july 6 1900 newark ohio usa
Cathrine Scanlon born 1849 ireland no location in ireland died apr 13 1903 newark oh usa.
i dont know how accurate all of these dates are as i have just recieved this information and have not had a chance to research alot of it on my own.

Just looked at the Kerry parish records online at www.irishgenealogy.ie

children of John Scanlan and Ellen Lynch all baptisms in Listowel parish
Catherine Scanlan 1 Apr 1822 townland Knockane
Mary 23 Aug 1824 Knockane
Margaret 23 Nov 1826 Knockane
Daniel 26 Apr 1829 Kinreken
Honora 23 Apr 1831 Kunnuccane
Thomas 3 May 1833 Knockane.

If this is the correct family John and Ellen were probably born around the early 1800's so it might be difficult to find any birth/baptismal records for them. Looks as if they lived mainly in Knockane townland.

Do you know the origins of the word lawckavanna Penn. It sounds like the Irish Lackabawn/Lackabane.

The correct spelling is Lackawanna, and it's a Native american word.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lackawanna
