Onan - Potterspury
« on: Saturday 05 May 12 01:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have been putting together the Robinson side of my family and I'm stuck!
Ann/Anne or Anna Robinson was baptised in 1851, the daughter of Edward & Jane Robinson.
I am trying to find who she married and initially thought she married Charles Burbidge, but am wondering if I have made a mistake and now I'm not so sure.

I did a search on Ann born 1851 in Potterspury and found an Ann Onan married to William Onan.  A good name to search - or so I thought!!  I can't find a marriage for a William Onan (who was also born in Potterspury) to anyone at all - on ancestry, freebmd, familysearch - nothing!

So - is anyone else able to spot a marriage for him to see if he married Ann Robinson?
Or can any one confirm who my Ann Robinson married?

Hope someone can help!

Debbie

Possibly William Onan married Ann Nightingale - in June quarter 1872 there is a marriage in Potterspury district  of William OWEN and Ann Nightingale.  Owen is not an unlikely misreading of the more unusual Onan.

An Ann Nightingale was baptised in Potterspury in June 1852.

Is there any reason, apart from the addition of Elizabeth to Ann Robinson's name in the marriage record for Charles Burbidge, that you think she isn't your Ann?

Charles' wife says she was born in Potterspury, and is aged 30 in 1881. There is no Ann Elizabeth Robinson birth registered in Pottersbury district during 1850/51.   It could just be that she chose a middle name for herself, but of course what you really need is the marriage register entry for her father's name.

Hi.

Debbie it seems as though the Potterpury marriages are still
at the Church for the time span you are looking for if it was
in that Parish.

If you find the couple and wish to go backwards this may help.

Galium,

Yes, it is just the addition of Elizabeth that is confusing me as the rest of the details match up.

So I think the certificate may be required here!

Thanks for your help.

Sandy - thanks for the link.  I'll take a look.

Debbie

The William Owen marriage is not necessarily a transcription error, the Onan family used Owen at times.  I have a sideline of a Jemima Read marrying a Henry Onan, sometimes they used Onan, sometimes Owen, and also Onan-Read got used - and occasionally Read even though it was the mother's maiden name. ::)  It won't be the William and Ann Onan you've mentioned but he could be a brother of the Henry.  I don't know anything else about Henry's family other than his descendants as the interest is through his wife Jemima Read.

Hi again Debbie.

I had added David's web link to My "Useful Northants Links".

David I wondered if you could explain something on the index to me
please as I have read through the information but can not see
an answer.

You have my grandfathers marriage in Kettering Reg District (which
took place in the Kettering Registry Office), yet the last column says
Copy Certificate Northampton.

Also I found my friend's certificate John Ashby 1849 in Hardingstone
R.D. on freebmd and your index also said Copy Northampton.

Therefore did it take place in Northampton R.O. or Hardingstone.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread Debbie, replies might help us here also.

EDITED: I think I may have answered some of the question

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0ma5/

It seems that you could order the certificate in Northampton for any of the 7 R.O.,
maybe that is what the last column means.  ???
