Please identify Uniform and Date.
« on: Sunday 06 May 12 05:30 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

Could someone please help me identify the uniform, which regiment and potential medals that my grand-uncle is wearing.

He was born in India 1915 and later served in the British Army in India during WW2.

There appears to be something of an insignia just below his right elbow, and I am not sure, if it is an imperfection in the photograph, or an insignia ?

I also need to know the colour of his uniform, sash and colour of buttons on tunic. There also appears to be a button on his right of tunic which could be a breast pocket ? There is also a belt buckle, but I cannot see a belt. I am also interested in the correct colour of the tartan hanging on the wall.
I have included the original nrestored photograph, to assist identifying regiment.

Any help would be appreciated.

Kind regards
George4

Hi

Since the regimental badge in the background is that of the Highland Light Infantry Regiment, I would assume that it is the Mackenzie Tartan.

The sash would be crimson.

A close up of the medals and collar badges would help.

I suspect he is of Warrant Officer rank the insignia on the arm is probably a crown and one of the medals will be a Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

I suspect he is a visitor/guest to the HLI mess, the collar badges would be a figure of St Andrew holding saltire if he were HLI although blurred the shape appears to be that of a fusil or grenade, I think HLI warrant officer would probably be wearing trews of McKenzie  tartan.

Hi Martin, Ady and James.

Thank you for you help, as it is appreciated.

Unfortunately I do not possess the original photograph, as this is a scanned copy sent to me, by a 2nd cousin.

I will ask her to rescan at a higher dpi, and hopefully we can identify medals.

Kind regards

Hi

Having enlarged the photograph, the Collar Badges appear to be cross swords topped by a crown. If this is so, he is in the Army Physical Training Corps. His rank is Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant  WO2.

Hi genechaser,

Thank you so much for your help, as it genuinely appreciated.

I was rummaging through my Nana's collection of family photograph's, and there is a picture of him as an physical instructor in the British Army. Another photograph later taken in England, he is  wearing his uniform, and he does indeed have an insignia on his right sleeve.

This is incredible information that you have given to me, as no one in the family knew of his rank.

Kind regards.
