John William Boyce -Yarmouth
« on: Sunday 06 May 12 20:31 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Having committed the cardinal sin of assumption, only to later discover documentation giving different information, I am now hoping for assistance in discovering my 2x great grandfather's true identity and the proper Boyce thread!

My great grandfather, John William Valentine Boyce was born in 1881 in Great Yarmouth. On his birth certificate his father is listed simply as John Boyce and his mother as Mary Ann Charlotte Boyce, late Leak, formerly Read.

On his 1st marriage certificate from 1902 he lists his father as John William Boyce - deceased, on his 2nd marriage as John William Leake (long story - I know this is Boyce!) fisherman, deceased and on his 3rd marriage in 1938 it is the same.

I have the marriage certificate between Mary Ann Charlotte Leak/Read and a John Boyce (no middle name) on March 26 1880 - listed as being 26 (making him born 1854) living Row 2 Great Yarmouth, Labourer, father James Boyce.

However, I cannot find birth/census/death that ties in a John William Boyce born 1854. I had worked under the impression that it was a John Boyce b 1852 Lowestoft son of James Boyce and Eliza Last but on the birth certificate his middle name is Henry and the year is wrong for the marriage.

There are a lot of Boyce's in the Yarmouth / Lowestoft area and they all seem to give their children the same names so I am lost!! ???

Sorry for the long post - wanted to give as much info as possible :)

Thanks

Karen

Hello Karen,

I'm wondering whether John William Valentine's mother used her name Charlotte, rather than the Mary Ann.

I searched the census for the address - Row 2, rather than using the names, and in 1881 and 1891, there is a Charlotte Boyce living there.  In 1891, she is a widow.

Do you know if John William V had any siblings?

Hi again,

Looks like this is John Boyce senior's burial record.
2 October, 1888, and luckily gives his address as Row 2, Great Yarmouth, age 38.

Hi there

Yes, JWV had - as far as I can tell, 3 siblings(yet to confirm via certificates etc but fits in with family recollections) James, Alice and Flora/Florence.

I have lots of info on JWV but it is his father - John - that I am struggling with. I am pretty sure he died about 1890 as that is whn Flora was born and, as you say, Charlotte is a widow in 1891. Any help appreciated :)

Looks like they had JWV and James christened at the same time - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-1-14265-16454-84?cc=1823613&wc=9020080

But if John the elder died 1888, I wonder who the father was of Flora, born 1890. I'll see if I can find a baptism for her.

That's great!! Gives extra info with names etc as well - much appreciated.

As you seem to know the area well is the name of the road Tower or Torres??

I have Alice as being registered apr 1886 and Flora as apr 1890 so they could both have been born end of the previous year I suppose?
 ???
Thanks again

Hello again Karen,

Sorry, couldn't find a baptism for either of the two girls.

I couldn't read the road properly either.  I know there was/is a Town Walls, but I don't know of a Tower Road, Town Road or Torres Road.

I had a look at a couple of family trees on Ancestry which appear to have similar details to yours.
As you say, the only "difference" is the middle name Henry.
Everything else seems to fit though, doesn't it?
