On Command
« on: Monday 07 May 12 13:56 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have a copy of the Artillery records for my gr x 4 grandfather for the '3rd Battalion Royal Regiment of Artillery'

On several occasions, in the notes for the Muster roll it states 'on command'.  Could someone tell me exactly what this means?

There is also a note which appears a few times which looks like v22 for pay - again I have no idea what this means?

Unfortunately, I do not have a copy of the original records only a transcription kindly sent to me a while ago.

If anyone could throw some light on this for me, I would be very grateful.

Regards

On Command sounds equivalent to the more usual On Guard or Duty. The musters were parades. Entries left blank mean the man was on parade. Entries give the reason why the man was not at the muster parade.

V22 is probably voucher 22. Muster books were returned with a number of loose vouchers. These have not survived. So he may have received (say) good conduct pay, and the voucher covering this in this paybook was Voucher 22. All vouchers are listed at the back of the muster book.

Thanks for your help Ken - that makes sense, some of the later entries did say On Guard.

Thank you also for clearing up the V22 question.
