Hamlet ROGERS
« on: Saturday 12 May 12 02:51 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a birth or baptism for Hamlet ROGERS supposedly born in Hanley or Shelton about 1811. His parents may be William ROGERS and Hannah CURZON but this is not yet confirmed. I would be interested in any Hamlet ROGERS born, married or died in the Potteries in the 1800s.

Marriage on familysearch 4 Feb 1795
Whitmore Staffs.
Hannah Curzon and William Rogers
Unfortunately can t seem to find any of their children yet.
I expct you have see the trees on Ancestry but they seem a bit confused (places of death etc) and different parents, and of course they can be very unreliable.
There was another Hamlet Rogers from Staffs. sentanced to transportation in 1838, he was a carpenter perhaps he was the Hamlet married to Ann.
Best wishes

Hi cath151. I agree with you about the trees on ancestry.

Just to tidy things up I found this death,
Deaths Sep 1849

Hamlet  Rogers  Newcastle T vol 25 page 298

Now is he the father of Martin, Hamlet and Elizabeth age 11 in 1851 and born Creele? France and is she the same Elizabeth in 1861 age 12 now elizabeth Curzon and born staffs.

Wow! What a lot of replies. You are all wonderful people.

I have discounted the Hamlet ROGERS who married Ann HOWELL as he was later transported to Australia as a convict. He was born in Brewood and we considered him for a while but he stayed in Australia after serving his sentence and his wife and daughter joined him as well as a brother, Cornelius. That Hamlet died and was buried in Victoria.

Our Hamlet died as Newcastle upon Tyne of cholera. His widow took four years off the age of her sons in the 1851 census maybe looking to remarry which she did. We suspect her second husband was related to Hamlet, perhaps a cousin as Hamlet's mother who  may have been Hannah CURZON.

We haven't been able to find a birth or baptism for Hamlet ROGERS born about 1838 either, although we have found a baptism for his older brother Martin. Elizabeth was indeed born in Criele in France but her birth was registered in England and her place of birth given as Hope Street,Shelton.

I too have found lots of errors in Ancestry as well as in Family Search.

2 possible Children?
Baptisms, St John the Evangelist, Hanley, Staffordshire;
SAR, 12 February 1797 (Birth 31 Jan 1797)
JOHN, 05 November 1797 (Birth 17 October 1795)
Parents WILLIAM/HAN Rogers
Abode Shelton
(Source FreeREG)

FreeREG also has 2 HAMLET Rogers Burials both Children 1829/1832.
No Parents names shown but someone was trying to name their Sons Hamlet.
I wonder if they are Sons of JOHN Rogers 1795?
He is easy to follow on Census. 1851 in Gateshead, Durham and 1861 in Northumberland.

Marriage;
1856, Hanley, Stafford, England
Henry CURZON, Father SAMUEL Curzon
Mary Ann ROGERS, Father JOHN Roberts

Henry was Christened 07 April 1811, Hanley, to SAMUEL/ANNE
He may have been previously Married to Elizabeth FORISTER, 23 Dec 1833, Stoke Upon Trent.
(they have a 2yr old Daug ELIZABETH in 1851 Census)

All Familysearch.Org Records.
