hiya rossie

william murtagh was berid alive in 1965 when the trench he was working on caved in.he was irish and his coffin was carried in accordance through the streets of lancaster on the friday where he lay in state till his funeral the next morning.

he had spent some time in the navy but that wouldnt give him the right to lay in state would it?

Hi
I have seen  obituary notices saying that a person is to be received into church the night before the funeral.

Have you thought about contacting the Cathedral and asking?

I think that they sometimes have a mass at the night. I'm not too well up on the Catholic Church.

Hello,

it's just part of the funeral. The closed coffin is brought into church in the evening and left in church overnight until the Requiem Mass the following morning.

best wishes
heywood
