Geneaology Research
« on: Wednesday 16 May 12 04:51 BST (UK) »
I am a descendant of James Doolan b1794 and his wife formerly Margaret Hayes b1798 who migrated from County Clare Ireland  arriving in Geelong Australia July 1852.
James and Margaret had six children and the five younger ones travelled with them settling in the Ballarat district around the time of the Gold discovery.
James was of Roman Catholic religion and the only member of his immediate family who migrated to Australia.
At this time James's Parish and Townland is unknown. As it is possible that his siblings have migrated to other countries eg USA Canada I post this brief in the hope of making contact with their descendants

Welcome to Rootschat Doolie.  People here are really helpful but you will have to have a bit more to work with than just a last name. How do you know James date of birth and is it possible you could find some first names from the same source? Hannah

Do the death certificates at that time give place of birth and children's names?
Do immigration records give children's names and ages for all family members?

Where did you get the information that they had 6 children and 5 travelled with them from Ireland?

the ship's passenger list gives names of the parents and the children and their ages.

the tombstone states that James died 30/4/1869.
place of birth given as County Clare
Cemetery records have no information of Jame's brothers or sisters

I think what you should do is start out on the Ireland forum and see if you can get some names and dates for these hypothetical siblings.  With that information, it will be possible to poke around in the US and Canada to see if there is any sign of them in the New World.  As it is now, the search is impossible because we don't know what we're looking for and so we wouldn't know it if we found it.

The dates involved are before the start of civil registration in Ireland and most church records don't back that far. To see if records do exist you'll need to know both the family's religion and where they lived (parish if not actual townland).

Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
