1841 Liverpool Census Maddock help
« on: Thursday 17 May 12 11:37 BST (UK) »
Hello
I have hit a brick wall with my Maddock family who should be on the 1841 Liverpool census. I think they may have been mis transcribed
They are
Samuel b 1786 and wife Martha b 1796 both in Cheshire

Children
Thomas 1820
Ann 1822
Jacob 1823
Sarah Ann 1826
Rebecca ? 1828
Marriage certs of children and directories have them in Liverpool
1828 Pellew St
1841 (May) on son Thomas marriage - address Summer Seat
Other addresses Clements st and Limekiln Lane (after 1841)
He was a chairmaker
Any suggestions?
Thanks
J

J, I don’t think it is a transcription problem, I think that several folios from the enumerators walks are missing.
Doing an address search for Limekiln Lane in the 1841C on FindMyPast, I find only two families and they are listed at the far north end of the street.

This is quite a long street and must have had other houses on it. Streets like Eldon and Raymond are also missing, yet they show up on the 1851C. These streets do show up in maps of the period.

On the 1851C, Samuel and Martha show up as living at 31 Bevington Street, and this is right in the middle of the area of missing portfolios and does not show in the 1841C.

Yes thats right for 1851, I didn't know there were pieces missing for 1841. Are they gone for good?

Another point is that before they moved to Liverpool, the family were in Gt Ancoats Street Manchester (circa 1825 Samuel in directory chairmaker 127 Gt Ancoats St) and the children were born there as none were born in Liverpool. I can't find their births in Manchester either.

There are known gaps in the 1841C and I think your chances of finding the missing info are slim.
I presume you know the info from the Middlewich Parish records??
John Maddock and his wife Ann had their son Samuel baptized on 15 Jan 1787.
Samuel Maddock married Martha Bursens in Middlewich on 29 May 1817.

I think you have to step around missing data if you can.

Thanks anyway Ian, 1841 would have shown the children with Samuel and Martha and maybe some others, also I wanted to confirm Rebecca was theirs as I can't find her marriage ( to John Hughes)in Liverpool which will confirm Samuel as father.
Re Middlewich, I have Samuel son of Thomas and Ann baptised 1789 not John.
Lots of Maddocks in Cheshire wonder if I have the right one now !
thanks again J
