Chelsea Pensioners
« on: Sunday 20 May 12 11:46 BST (UK) »
Hi

Would anybody be in a position to look up a couple of guys who came from Donegal please?

If so and it is allowed their names etc., were:

John Spence - 1799 in Donegal

Alexander - 1860 - Raphoe in Donegal

Sorry, please can I add a few more?

Joseph Alexander - Ballemena - 1870
George Courtney - Ahoghill - 1836
George Whittaker - 1848 - Bellary?
William Whittaker - 1852 - St Johnstone
William John Whittaker - 1851 - St Johnston
William Whittaker - 1860 - Donegal

Many thanks :)

I think you may need to find a library with findmypast where you can look at these yourself - just for starters
John Spence has 10 images in his record
Alexander has 17 images

First time doing this so if I'm not following etiquette please forgive me. I am looking to contact the person that had been trying to make sense of the Whittaker and Spence families of Raphoe in Donegal. I know the posts were made years ago so maybe they have the info they wanted if not we can exchange notes. I think their tag name was Cranstone. I know of these families because they would seem to be my relations. I would be interested in knowing Cranston's relationship to them. If    anyone can push this post in the right direction you have my thanks.

Boris

I'm sorry Cranston I seem to find this site complicated to use. Any way I'll get the hang of it eventually. My connection is with the Whittaker's through my mother. If the Spence family are who I think they are then that is my wife's family. I never realised that the Whittaker's and Spence's  had a connection further back in time long before my wife and I met. Can I ask why your interest you seem to indicate a connection with William John Whittaker my 2x grandfather.

Hi
Don't worry I have to work my way around the site too, I find it a bit complicated, like today I saw you had replied on my email page but then trying to find the message on here said it I had no messages so I had to navigate through until I found it as I knew it was on here somewhere!
I don't know if there is a connection to my family yet but I was trying to find a link (if there is one) by trying to find out more on William John ie., his parents etc., going backwards in his life.
Who was/is your mum?  Was she born in Donegal?
Who is your wife and who were/are her parents, the Spences?
I have cousins still on the Spence side in Donegal.
I do have some information on William John and will pass it on to you, if you would like.  Not sure if I ever found his parents until I look in my file.  Sarah McNabbs rings a bell as to a wife and I am sure I have his children in that family.   I try to wrote down anything relating to Whittaker/Spence I find in Donegal and I think I have a few things on William John, but they might be different people along the way.
Does any of that rings any bells with you?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Sorry I wasn't in touch earlier but we have had a power cut - yet again - for only 4 hours this time!
Regards
Cranstone

Do you mind if I ask where you live. Is it in the Uk. The reason I ask is that I know some relatives went to Australia.
