Sands
« on: Tuesday 22 May 12 23:07 BST (UK) »
Hi, trying to confirm a potential link:  how do I confirm or discount that the William Sands who married Rosanna in 1860 is the same William Sands christened in 1838, son of Joseph and Catherine?  See below...

Joseph Sands (b 1801) married Catherine Bate (b circa 1802, d 1871) on 4th December 1831 at Prestwich, Lancashire.   https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FMRZ-SP1 They had the following children:
Thomas b circa 1832
Elizabeth b circa 1837
William christened at Manchester Cathedral 4th April1838 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NGKD-99K
George b circa 1840

++++++++

William Sands (b Manchester 1838) married Rosanna McKervey (b Manchester 1838) at Saint Wilfred’s Roman Catholic Parish Church, Hulme in 1860.

Regards, Phil

A copy of the marriage cert will show his fathers name and occupation

PS:  When were the first Marriage Certificates available?  Would Joseph and Catherine have a Marriage Certificate that I could order?

You say you are trying to prove that the William Sands who married in 1860 was the son of Joseph - so it's the 1860 marriage cert that will show his fathers name

His possible parents married in 1831 - not 1838 - so there are no marriage certs for that period - just entries in parish records

Marriage certs are available for marriages taking place on or after 1.7.1837 when Civil Registration was introduced

Marriages Sep 1860

William Sands  Chorlton  8c 656

Rosanna does not appear on the same page but a search using only Sept and 8c brings her up as Rosanna McKervey. Evidently the page number for her was hard to read. So if ordering from the GRO use the details for William
