About BUTLER, SHELLY, GRIFFITHS in Cape Town
« on: Thursday 24 May 12 14:35 BST (UK) »
Hi everyboby,

I'm a new member from France. Some of my ancestors lived in Cape Town, South Africa, circa 1820-1850.

- One of them was Timothy SHELLY (housekeeper, discharged soldier from 49th foot). He died in 1838, had 2 wifes (Ann and Elisabeth) and many daughters.

- The other one was Richard BUTLER, married with Marcella SHELLY
(Timothy's daughter) in 1826. He's said "captain" in South African
Commercial Advertiser, had 2 sons (Richard Francis and Edward James). He
 died circa 1830.

If you have some connections with my ancestors, please, you can write me.
I have some interests for these families too :

Joseph Stidworthy : was witness for Richard Butler 's mariage
James Griffiths (carpenter) : married with another Shelly's daughter
George Watson : I don't know who he is, but he seemed to have some connections with my ancestors.

Thank you in advance.
CV.

Hi!

Thank you for your answer.
Could you tell me what is "illiquid case" and "provisional case"? I'm french and I don't really understand what it means.

Thank you!

Hi Illiquid case is where it is hard to determine who gets what after a divorce such as the husband has a car but if it is sold the price obtained may be small or where the two parties divorcing do not oppose each other. This I found on the Internet. Provisional case from what I can see on the net is where two parties sue each other until a judgment is reached or they settle out of court. Open to correction on this one.

Hi found some info on Richard Butler, appears he went insolvent between 1880 and 1894. Try this link. http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm200gi.

Then click on the KAB repository box, when it opens type in Butler Richard and enter. A list of documents will appear, just click on Result Summary. Hope this helps regards Derek.

Cape Town Directories: [I checked for Butler, Shelley, Watson & Stidworthy]
1826:
Griffiths, John, public house, 10 Zieke Street

1828:
Shelley, Timothy, billiard house, 17 Ziekedwars Street   [dwars means cross/intersected]
Griffiths, John, 21 St Jan Street
Stidworthy, Joseph, builder, 3 Marktplein

1830:
Griffiths, John, 15 Plein Street
Watson, G, Barrack Street
Stidworthy, Joseph, mason & ornamental plasterer, Totness Cottage.

I do not know if this means that they owned the properties, which is maybe why there is no ref for Butler?  Maybe James Griffiths was John's son?   Zieke Street links Griffiths & Shelley - maybe they were all neighbours??

Hope this helps
Sandy
