Uniform Idendtification

Hello, attached is a photo of Thomas Hooper b.c. 1855 Cornwall died 1935 Perth, Australia - he may have arrived Australia mid 1860s or possibly later - was wondering, does anybody recognize the uniform?

just had a look in army pension records for your thomas hooper but nothing jumps out for him do you have any more definate info on him , also have you looked at the site THE SHIPS LIST  it covers a lot of passenger movements around the world for the period before the emmigration and passenger lists start in 1890.

His uniform and cap have the look of a cavalry or Hussar Regiment, not sure which one though.

If he emigrated aged ten it cannot be a British (home) uniform. Unless he came back or it is not who you think it is.

Good evening,

I would say yeomanry rather than regular if it's a british uniform. Also possibly aussie police as several states had mounted forces who dressed in similar uniforms.

have you got any more info regarding his parents and siblings so we can try and track him in the censuses , only i,ve just looked and there are only 7 records for a thomas hooper in the 1861 cen and 2 of those have a middle name .
after reading the other posts re the uniform looks like he was of some sort of mounted regt only if you look at the sword from what we can see it appears to have a slight curve from the hilt down so would make it a slashing weapon rather than stabbing !!.

If this is the Thomas Hooper who married Georgiana Grigg then he was living in Ballarat, Victoria when the first of their children were born.

There is very little on line about Australian State defence units in the 1800's but I'd suggest the Victoria State Militia might be a starter here, perhaps the Prince of Wales' Light Horse ?  The Wikipedia article "Colonial forces of Australia" gives some background but we need a specialist in Australian uniforms for this one
